Brian Kelly: "We are not the football team I thought we were. This is a total failure."

ORLANDO, Fla. – After Florida State ripped LSU apart, the shredding continued in a postgame news conference that bordered on shocking.
Brian Kelly laid bare LSU football’s failures, sparing no one from his blistering rebuke. He called out himself, his staff and his team in an unrestrained way not often heard from a college coach after a loss in hostile environment to a top-10 opponent.
"We certainly are not the football team I thought we were," Kelly said Sunday after No. 5 LSU’s 45-24 loss to No. 8 Florida State, "and we’ve got to do a much better job, obviously, in developing our football team. We clearly were short in a lot of areas tonight, and that falls on me."
quote:
"This is a total failure," he said, "from a coaching standpoint and a player standpoint that we have to obviously address and we have to own."
Kelly described his team as a bunch of imposters.
"We thought we were the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something," he said. "I don’t know what we thought, but we were mistaken."
quote:
I probably shouldn’t bother with a defense of LSU, because its own coach offered none, but I will say, this matchup of talent-rich teams was competitive for more than three quarters. A failure to execute in a few critical fourth-down situations meant LSU left more than a few points out there.
But the cold truth is FSU whupped LSU at the lines of scrimmage, FSU quarterback Jordan Travis outplayed LSU’s Jayden Daniels, FSU's wide receivers outplayed LSU’s, and LSU’s secondary looked like the liability that Kelly had warned it might be.

Maybe the HC should refrain from saying we will beat the hell out of a team.

It's a pretty remarkable bit of leadership to bring all the same problems forward from the prior year. Including scheming out our best defender and muffing a punt.
Now that's continuity.

He isn’t the coach we thought he was either
Especially if he misjudged the team THIS much

Our problems go way back before any of that.

More blowouts coming. Thank goodness we get a break next weekend. Nothing like Grambling to help stop our regular season blowout streak.

Yeah that was some O bull shite man. I thought we got away from that bull shite.

To Kelly’s credit, he says the right thing almost every time. Now to see if that actually translates to winning

I was 100% on board with the BK hire and still am for now. One thing that worried me though was when I looked at ND qbs during his time there. Nobody that really set the world on fire and we are talking about ND. They should have been able to get at least one superstar qb in all his time there. I think there’s a little similarity to Miles when it comes to qbs.

He should absolutely say that every week. You can’t go into a game thinking otherwise.

This is a legitimate concern. I'm not throwing in the towel, but it's a scary thought.

i wasn't mad when cbk left south bend. he's a solid coach, but i knew we'd never get over the hump with him. i still think he may do well in br, but it prolly won't be any better than he did in south bend.
as far as freeman, i'm not saying he'll do better than cbk, but i think he gives us some recruiting potential which may or may not come to fruition.
it still feels weird living in louisiana and seeing cbk on the sidelines at lsu.

Do you know any Notre Dame fans? I know several in and around the country and not one was mad about him leaving.

Fla st has way more talent than lsu
I get the coaching was bad but Fla st has some dogs out there that quite frankly we don’t have

He talks too much. Dumb thing to say about beating a team pregame. Even O was respectful prior to the game.

I’ve been skeptical of the coordinators from day 1.
When everybody else is looking for up and coming guys with new and innovative systems, Kelly brings in 2 journeymen that have never really found success at the 30 schools they worked out before.

FSU has the #20th ranked roster going into 23'. They have 1 5* on the roster.
LSU has the #7 ranked roster. LSU has 6 more 5* players and 11 more 4* players.

He also said adversity was their strength. Sorta like a mix between Dennis Green and Creepy Joe.
