Would love to have seen him stay and contribute, but this isn't a big surprise. He was probably the most naturally gifted player on a team that lacked big time overall talent. Yet, he couldn't really find a role and on most occasions split time with Edwards.
Objectively, he had one season left to play...on a team bringing a load of big time talent...in a relatively crowded back court. His options were:
1. Stay and likely not play the minutes he was hoping to play;
2. Transfer and sit out a year to then play one final season;
3. Leave and try to begin a pro career.
I doubt he is confident he's going to be picked in the draft. He's probably just trying to go the Blakeney/Quaterman route. I understand the decision. He probably figured he wasn't going to significantly boost his stock by coming back. So he might as well just start working his way up the "minor leagues" rather than prolong it one more year
Best of luck to him

Dude was at one time this pass season a projected 2nd rounder, If he stay he won't play, this is a smart move for him.

Wasn't going to start over Sampson though.
Come on. Smart will be a starter very early in the season if not immediately.

I wish Sampson well. But I do think that Smart and Mays would have passed him during the season.

Kid has unlimited athleticism but has very low basketball IQ. With his physical attributes, could have been a very good perimeter defender for Wade next year. Good luck...

Quarterman has proven nothing but that he has a ceiling of the rare ten-day contract while toiling in the G-League his entire career.
Guess you missed that he signed a 2yr contract with the Rockets

Edwards and Mays both are coming off good seasons. One will be a JR, one a SR. I think Smart comes off the bench to avoid starting 3 freshmen. We're super deep at guard. Smart will still get 25mpg+

Sampson dealt with an ankle all year. That's why his minutes were limited. He would have played 35mpg otherwise

His combination of athleticism and shooting stroke could be potent
It doesn't matter how pure stroke is if the ball doesn't go in the hole

On a team with not a whole lot of talent
He'd be the 4th best guard/wing next year

Neither one of them is playing overseas where everyone said they’d be.

I hope he does well. I really like his game, but I think he's making a terrible decision.
