Bo Pelini had a kickass defense in 2003

I think I saw some highlights from the Citrus Bowl when we played Penn State in there.

That college is smaller than 5A schools.
Like how they played...

Pelini could’ve been a great DC, but he was obviously a burnout and mailed it in.
Huge difference.

Physical, flying to the ball, zone coverage, pressure on the QB. Looks good to me

Lol Pelini had a top ranked defense in 2007 too.
I’m optimistic about Jones but this doesn’t mean much

You think Jones has been in a coma since then? He’s been actively coaching the whole time. Virtually every major coordinator in the country was also coaching back in those ancient times 10 years ago.

Think the point is he hasn't proven he can coach a defense against modern NCAA offenses. It's nearly impossible to have a lockdown defense now with the rules and modern offenses in NCAA.
You have to wonder why this guy never got much opportunity later down the line until now. Aranda didn't even ask him to come along anywhere with him yet he recommends him to O? Is Aranda trying to take the LSU job?
I hope he's great and we're all wrong but it's hard not to recognize lots of red flags with this guy.

The same can be said about Pelini

It was said about Pelini and it was stupid then, too.
Pelini sucked because he’s a burnout that lost his motivation and mailed it in. Not because he forgot how to coach or couldn’t adapt.
That’s just one of those things that gets repeated so much, everyone believes it.

Where would he ask him to go? They were together at Wisconsin and Jones went to the NFL the same year Aranda came to LSU.
He had been in college for a long time and finally got his big break in the NFL. I doubt he was looking for a college position coaching spot at the time.
And Baylor DC Ron Roberts is Aranda’s mentor,
So where, exactly, are all these opportunities that Aranda had to hire him?

One difference is that he’s been dedicated to defense as offenses have shifted. That’s very different than becoming a head coach and running an entire program over the last 4-7 years.
That’s no guarantee of success because we don’t know how he will call a defense to slow down a spread offense. However, Jones has at least been doing film work and drills to break down these offenses with his position group and work on their matchups.
