He bought us our track uniforms in 1969, and some us new shoes, we didn't have boosters back then, all out of his own pocket.

My favorite story from Boots was the one where he went to check on Billy Cannon after Billy's house had been searched by the Feds for counterfeiting. Always a good friend of Billy's, he found Billy sitting dejected on the floor of his house and he asked Cannon if there was anything he could do for him.

"Yeah, Boots. You got change for a hundred?"

R.I.P. Boots.

Is that the guy who threw the wrench in "Dodgeball"?

ETA: Was not trying to make light of his passing. Hope he RIP.

RIP BOOTS. True tiger and great person.

I always hard to time running because he would have you laughing the whole time...he was definitely the highlight of many an LSU football camp.

I was there too. I've never forgotten those lessons.

...And that when you run your legs will go as fast as your arms go, so if you want to run faster, move your arms faster. He made me a better person and faster around the bases. Prayers for him and his family.

Boots was a real character and a great guy. I just looked up the "fartlek" method he talked about, and apparently it's a real thing. I thought he was just trying to get us to crack up. Boots made running training a lot of fun and definitely made me faster than I should have been.

Boots was a real character around Baton Rouge. Back in the 50's and 60's Baton Rouge was a large town more than a city and everyone knew everyone, Boots helped all around town.

Wish we had more like him, he will be missed.

We had Boots as a coach at Baker for one year in the mid 60s.... I recall him being all in, enthusiastic, confident and he expected the same of us players. It was nice to follow his successful career.

He coached me up some during my senior year for track & I did some work outs at LSU w/ other track athletes & some football players getting ready for the draft. He also drove from BR to the Berry to coach me & spent a lot of time on small details/technique that definitely made a difference. He was certainly a memorable character and he knew what he was doing. I called to check in on him when I moved to Baton Rouge/got to LSU. I never kept in touch after that though. RIP coach

I remember him from Skip's baseball camp. He would bet anyone there their lunch money he would beat them in a 5 yard race. No one ever took him up on it.
