#11 8-3 LSU faced off vs #17 8-3 Iowa State in the Sun Bowl on this date in 1971. Even with local UTEP having played and beaten Ole Miss in the game in 1967 this was the Sun Bowl's first sellout.
LSU nor Iowa State could do much in the first half as LSU led 6-3 at the break. Now, right before halftime Bert Jones hit his cousin Andy Hamilton for a 77 yd pass to the Cyclone 4. But Iowa State held on fourth down and the half ended.
Bert Jones had a big second half and won the MVP of the bowl throwing three touchdown passes. He ran for another TD late in the game as LSU won, 33-15. This was Tommy Casanova's final game as an LSU Tiger.
Iowa State's coach was Johnny Majors who left for Pitt following the 1972 season and then of course returned to his alma mater Tennessee in 1977. He took all three schools to the Sun Bowl.
Even with the win, LSU stayed 11th in the final AP Poll. Besides LSU, Iowa State's three other losses were to #1 Nebraska, #2 Oklahoma and #3 Colorado, all members of the Big 8

The one thing I remember about that game was LSU OL Tyler Lafauci (or Mike Demarie?) and ISU LB Keith Schroeder were both ejected for fighting.

It’s sad seeing a packed crowd and thinking about the bowl games today

I watched that game with my dad. I was 9 years old. Great memories.

That was a different time altogether. There were only 12 bowl games in 1971 so it was a big deal getting to go to one.

Yep. In today's CFB world, the '71 team would be in the playoffs. Then, we were playing a non-major bowl.

My dad took a job in El Paso that season and went to the bowl game. What luck.
