The New York Times had an article about each NFL teams best first round picks and biggest bust first round draft picks and they had Billy Cannon Jr. as Dallas's biggest first round bust....and JR as Oaklands as if you couldn't have guessed that....sorry no link I'm on my phone.

Found this. I played in the state at the time and remember him being one of the better players in the state, and there were some good ones at the time.

Prior to the 1980 Amateur Draft, 25 of the 26 teams received a letter from Billy Cannon, Jr. explaining that he would be attending college. The 26th team was the New York Yankees who were not allowed to make a selection until the third round, yet "conveniently" they found that a sure first round selection named Cannon was still available! Commissioner Bowie Kuhn found the Yankees guilty of tampering and forfeited their pick.

He did graduate Broadmoor in 1980. He & his pals allegedly climbed the water tower around Sherwood Country Club & painted "Go Bucs! BHS '80" on it, in red paint.
Two thing happened: LSU Coach died in January 1980 & Cannon Sr. played the "My son may play Pro Baseball" game, which wasn't nearly as popular back then & did not sit well with many people in BR especially after Rein's death.

I wouldn't call somebody who broke his neck (against the Saints I might add) a "bust."

That was some of Billy Sr.'s tomfoolery as I recall.

Correct, my sister graduated with him.

yea, he was a stud coming out of Broadmoor in 1980 but like others have said , the pressure to have gone to LSU to play football would have been incredible.Everyone would have expected him to return a punt for a td. Nothing wrong with what he did; heck Stovall's son who didn't play college ball went to Baylor instead of LSU at the same time.

Want to hear something eerie?
Billy Jr. returned a punt against Istrouma (his dad's alma mater) 89 yds for a TD on Halloween Night 1979. True story.

Not true. He was every bit an athlete like his dad. Good at football, baseball, and basketball. Our track team at Broadmoor would only win once Billy showed up if he was not playing another sport. He wanted to play baseball and football in college.

Rocker you're clueless this guy was a stud in every sport. He would have been a first rounder in two major sports if he'd wanted too. Thats not enough for you...............
