Ben McDonald giving up homerun to Standford’s Paul Carey 1987 CWS. Team was set up to win it all.

The biggest disappointment in 08 wasn't the offense, it was the defense.

Thought about that as well;

Maleveto really was the counterpart to the int fest happening on offense. Someone would have to confirm but I think Les offered the DC position to Boom. He declined and left AU to be HCIW at UT.

The great tragedy coming out of '08 was Les entrenched himself in an offense that was overly protective and from which he would never go back. Whether due more to Perrilloux or Malveto who knows.

Agree the D often had it's back to the wall due to INTs, but still wasn't the only troubles.

The Great Misconception imo.
Given a competent QB Miles would up the attempts.
2009, 2012 and 2013 attempts were on par with '02, '04, '05 and '06.
Outliers '03, and '07 (also 2 @40att OT games)had an extra game (SECCG) to increase season attempts.

Most coaches won't force a heavy pass to run ratio with inaccurate and inconsistent QBs.
Exceptions:
Lee 2008 was pass heavy(by Miles std) due partly to Crowton playcalling, plus large deficits.
JJ 2009 att was also near the norm, again from Crowton, plus a really awful run game.

Oklahoma St. losing to Iowa State in 2011. We could've gone down as the best team in history. This game quite possibly changed the landscape of college football. At the time Les was 3-2 vs Saban. Had 1 championship at LSU to 0 for Nick at Alabama. If OKST beats Iowa State, LSU destroys OKST in the championship game, and that LSU team goes down as the best team in history. Les Miles would have been 3-2 vs Saban and would have had had 2 to Sabans 1 Natty at LSU, and Bama has 0 in the BCS era. Instead, Bama gets the rematch and wins. Les is 3-3 vs Saban and Saban has 2 to Les' 1 Natty. That rematch brought about the playoff system. LSU drops behind Alabama and Nick doesn't look back. So the opportunity to play OKST in the BCS national championship game was the biggest missed opportunity in the history of LSU sports, and quite possibly college football.

This would have only changed that year.

Saban still would be the greatest of all time.

Les would still be a average coach, who walked into the perfect situation.

Les still was and is the coach who followed the best college coach ever.

Like Skip said, "It didn't matter who I hired, anyone was going to win with what Nick had built."

I agree. The OL really got their asses handed to them.

When the defense knows you are going to be 1 dimensional, the OL didn't stand a chance.

That LSU team needed a smart coach that night, no way LSU was going to run the shite Miles put out there and win.

What dimension will you use when you can't pass protect or run the ball?
Save me the GSU BS as Bama took the weekend off prior to Iron.

Like the only coach to beat Saban that year?
You're a joke.

1 Spurrier
2 Perrilloux - this is STILL affecting us.

I think Mathieu should be top 10, as the defense was way down when we had a killer offense

Not hiring Homer Norton away from Centenary in the 1930s. His last two games coaching the Gents against the Tigers were a win in Shreveport and a tie in Baton Rouge.

Had we done so, we would have deprived the Aggies of their only national championship.

Perriloux would not have positively altered the perception of Tiger quarterbacks but would have continued their favorable ratings.

Yeah, that was actually what I was clumsily trying to say. His dismissal set the stage for the perception to be negatively affected, if he uses his head, he doesn't get dismissed, probably sets himself up to make an NFL roster and probably stops the LSU/Les can't develop a QB before it starts.

I sure would like us to get another Rohan Davy. Something about that guy, I loved him at QB.
