I’m not saying Alcindor wasn’t great because he was but you’re throwing Christian Laetner in his class? Geez man.

Try to imagine any lineup that you could add Christian Laettner to and then miss the postseason altogether 2/3 years. Pete was an unbelievable showman but to call him the greatest college basketball player ever is simply laughable. Lots of players have single-handedly carried no-talent teams on deep postseason runs. Look at Larry Bird in 1979.

Then come back for an intelligent conversation.

With the guy who thinks Pete was better than Jordan or Laettner? I'll pass.

HE WAS AT DUKE WITH COACH K AND A TON OF OTHER NBA PLAYERS. Pete had 4 other guys from the Rec.

Bird was unreal. He is top 4 all time in my book way before these hacks today because of EVERYTHING he did. He could pass, rebound, play defense and was an unbelievable scorer. He had a bigger skill set than Jordan IN THE PROS AND COLLEGE but wasn’t a better player. If you want to say Bird or Alcindor were more impactful, maybe but it doesn’t mean they were more skilled or BETTER.
Pete did all that without a 3 point line and couldn’t play as a freshman.

Pete would KILL this league at this time and if LSU was playing with a 3 point line then, they are in the NCAA multiple years for damn sure.

You NEVER saw him live and don’t have a freaking clue.

I didn’t say he was better than Michael as a pro but in college damn sure was. Jordan had 2 other HOF NBA AND college basketball players on his college team in Perkins (4th overall in 84) and Worthy(1st pick in 82). Even a dumbass like you could have coached that team.

But don’t t believe me, watch the movies and read what other HOF NBA and College players said about Pete.

I tried to find books and movies and everything but just can’t find any on Laetner.

I remembered Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley from those teams - you know NBA players that actually HAD A CAREER.

I only respond (this is definitely a troll) b/c Pistol Pete Maravich was someone I idolized as a youngster. I made sure and wear the #23 whenever they were giving out jerseys. I learned to dribble b/w the legs and around the back watching him play. He was by far the most amazing basketball player I ever witnessed play. He could do it all: pass, dribble, shoot, and rebound. He did o.k. on defense but he rarely was guarding the other teams best player. He needed his energy to score! LOL

Having seen both play their respective sports and there isn’t a remote comparison. I’m not sure if some of you understand how much better Pete was than everyone else that ever put on a college basketball jersey.

True, oh so true. Saw The Great One play when I was in the 8th grade and I am still in awe. NO ONE that has ever played MCBB can compare to Pete.

This isn't completely fair. Football has been a much bigger deal for much longer at LSU and football is just a bigger operation, generally. You have more kids (and adults, for that matter, on the training and support staff, coaches, etc.) come through the football program in 4 years than you do in 20 or 25 for basketball.

Having said that, Pistol was a generational "event". It is difficult to even put it into words. He did transcend the team's record, etc.

Alcindor was the greatest college player in history.

Great player but his size advantage was a big reason for that as much as his skill. Overall player, sure he is the greatest.

Pistol was the greatest scorer the game ever saw and one of the best passers of a time. He could do it all on the offensive side of the ball.

He’s a better passing and maybe even better scoring prime Steph Curry. His shots simply didn’t get to count as 3s.

To the original question, JD has been amazing but still won’t be the greatest football player much less QB in LSU history. That belongs to Burrow and then several others are higher than him as a player.

Pistol Pete is the greatest bball player at LSU of all time and top two ever, so it’s not even close. To clarify, top two college players ever.

You cannot compare Pistol Pete to anyone. His scoring record will never be broken.

BS! UCLA/John Wooden bought the best players available.
There wasn't a player on the LSU team, besides Pete, that could have made UCLA's practice squad.
Pete had to do it all.

Alcindor was a BETTEr all around player than Pistol Pete in high school,in college and in the NBA!!

Alcindor/Jabbar won 3 NCAA titles,3 MOP awards,2 Player of the year awards..

Average 29ppg,26ppg,24ppg=26ppg..15rebounds

Lew rebounded, blocked shots, assisted(had great outlet passes and scored!

He was more efficent.

Shot over 62% in 3 NCAA years WITHOUT DUNKING his last 2 seasons..

2300 points and 1300 rebounds in 3 seasons![

He shot the sky hook with either hand from each block.

He had a reliable 12-15 foot jumper!

He had the turnaround jumper.

He dominated his sport at all 3 levels against the best of the best!!

The SEC was Kentucky in Pete's days!!

THE SEC WAS NOT as competitive a conference and did not play the strong non conference/conference games the West Coast teams and a few other teams played(Texas Western/UTEP proved that)!

Alcindor didnt dominate because of his size,he dominated because of his skills, talent, work ethic!

Only 2 other big men had the same success and domination in hs,college,NBA!

The Great Wilt Chamberlain in hs,college(a short stay),Harlem Globetrotters,NBA...

The Great Bill Russell also dominated at McClymonds HS in West Oakland(after his family moved from Louisiana),NCAA titles @ University of San Francisco, titles in the NBA with Boston..

If it was about size every player 6'7 or taller wouldve dominated for their entire careers!

Pete was not even as dominate in the NCAA as Bill Russell!!

As GREAT as Pistol Pete was his top accomplishment will always be his college scoring!!

Great NBA scorer but was in a 3 year battle with David Skywalker Thompson & George Iceman Gervin for league leader.

Both those dudes had higher fg % than Pistol !!

Both rebounded better!

Pete averaged more assists but The Iceman averaged more points and was at 50% fg for his career!!

YEAH WITH A 3PT LINE PETE WOULDVE AVERAGED 60PPG IN COLLEGE AND 30PPG IN THE NBA!!

HE WOULDVE SCORED WITH EASE BUT HE NEVER WAS GONNA SHOOT A GREAT %!!

HE SHOT UNDER 45% FROM 2 PT RANGE VS GERVIN SHOOTING 50% FROM 2.

Pete was a professional scoring machine all over the court, from anywhere on the court!!

BALL HANDLING,others before him and after him were magicians with the basketball..could make fancy passes with either hand.. dribble between the legs and behind the back etc!

Pete was never the best pg or sg!

His shooting % proves that!!

Cant ever dismiss his greatness !

But to even suggest offensive juggernaut Pistol Pete Maravich is even in the conversation for the greatest college basketball player ever BEFORE acknowledging number one is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar then known as Lewis Alcindor is blasphemy!!

That's on the level of nonsense as these '80s '90s and 2000s kids who automatically dismiss Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar saying Michael Jordan is the greatest in the NBA history!

Jabbar has 6 NBA rings,NBA ROY,6 NBA MVP Awards, led the league in blocks×4,led in rebounding×1,led in scoring×2,All NBA on both sides of the court!

Led Milwaukee to the NBA title in his 2nd season avg 31ppg & 16rebounds/reg season MVP.. 27ppg & 18 rebounds/finals MVP..

He carried the Big "O"to his only title.

Although "O"had a decent regular season Bobby Dandridge was the second leading scorer in the playoffs..

Wilt and Kareem, we are talking about top four all-time scoring..

Top 3 all time block shots (Kareem).

Top 3 rebounding(Wilt,Kareem) along with Russell..
