re: Better away game road trip: Athens or Tuscaloosa?

Tuscaloosa is a business trip not pleasure. We are there for one reason only...and that's to WIN. Downtown Athens is a good time.

Went to Tuscaloosa twice while I was at LSU. Always a really fun trip, but I am given to understand that Athens was by and large the absolute best away road trip to go to. My vote is for Athens. Also, not really related, but the gumps have a surprisingly decent campus....

Went to the last 2 games at Athens... 1st time I sat in the tech deck, (upper deck on top of an upper deck)... Never again I said.
Next trip sold my uppers and bought some right by the band.
Do whatever you can to not sit up in the clouds, it really ruins the game experience

Athens as far as a better town. But I love going to Ttown and running my mouth.

Athens is beautiful and has something like 70 bars in the city. Tuscaloosa is a dump. Lemme think real hard about this one.

Athens for the town, Tuscaloosa for the football. Just depends on what you want more; a party experience with some culture mixed in or to view a monster football game between two of the best programs in recent years.

I love Tuscaloosa, but Athens is a top 5 college town in the country.

Athens FTW. Two reasons. Athens is way more fun than T-Town. Second is that because of permanent rivals and 8 game schedules, you likely won't have another opportunity to see LSU in Athens for close to a decade.

I've been to both. I went to Athens in 2009 and Tuscaloosa in 2009 and 2011. They both have their advantages. The quaint Athens downtown quarter immediately adjacent to its campus has unparalleled nightlife. I recall standing atop a low rise around midnight on Friday, smothered in a warm smooth buzz, looking down at what appeared to be an unbroken river of platinum beauties. The women in Athens are generally stunning. Moreover, the LSU game seemed to attract a number of lovelies from nearby Atlanta. The nightlife sector offers a variety of bars, from the cheesy meatmarket to the more cerebral, mellow dive-bar. The very young UGA fans were a bit bellicose, but the supporters over the age of 25 were affable and conversant. Gameday tailgating was average, although I liked the fact that LSU fans could pass the time in bars not too far removed from the stadium. Sanford itself is interesting, as it appears to jut skyward from the very heart of campus (at least that was my impression).
The Tuscaloosa Strip isn't quite as genteel or sophisticated as Athens. The nightlife there is more akin to what you might find in a typical southern college town - a bit young and a bit crass. Bars like the Bear Trap are populated by a very young crowd (and distrubing life-sized murals of Saban). The Houndstooth is typically patronized by a slightly older set. There are also a number of more idiosycratic bars in downtown Tuscaloosa, not far from the Strip. All that said, I have had a blast both times I've gone. The Alabama fans are knowledgeable and almost insufferably smug, but they are very friendly. Rammer Jammer and Sweet Home Alabama lose their novelty quickly, but typically become a pretext for flirtation and mingling. The women at Innisfree on Friday night in 2011 were memorable. I must say that bar had the single best staff of bouncers I've ever encountered. They kept the peace between LSU and Alabama fans, which made the experience thoroughly enjoyable. Gameday tailgating at Bama is sedate, but like Athens, LSU fans can pass the hours in enclaves at various bars. Whiling away the day at the Houndstooth and then drifting to Bryant-Denny has become a tradition for many visitors. (One additional warning. If you lodge far from the Strip and campus, finding a cab back to your hotel can be nightmarish. My group literally had to bribe a pizza delivery driver to take us home one evening in 2009. Bring a DD.)
Since we play UGA less frequently, if I had to choose one game to attend this year, I suppose it would be Athens. But you should go to Tuscaloosa at some point.

Athens is a much better trip. Lots to do and see. Tuscaloser is, well, in Alabama.

That pretty much nails it

Seems pretty unanimous.
Under the circumstances, Athens is a no brainer really. Athens, GA is one of the very best college towns in America and they're on the rotation only about once every 6 or 7 years. LSU is at Alabama every other year so there are FAR more chances to go there in the future. They're both fun game weekend locations for different reasons.

Athens is the best college town in america. the answer is simple.

Haven't been to Tuscaloosa for a game (although I have been there to stay with some friends for a weekend), but I went to Athens last time we played there, and it was one of the best road trips I've made. Absolute awesome gameday experience, the bars are great, and the UGA fans (once you get past that annoying arse barking of course) were actually very cool and friendly to all of us.

athens is my favorite away trip tied with tenn. as has been said here already, downtown athens is supremely cool. gameday atmosphere was quite good.
tuscaloosa itself wasn't that great. the strip was so crowded we couldn't get in anywhere and had to settle for a disappointing dive. campus atmosphere was nice. people went out of their way to be nice to us. i was highly impressed with the game. it's the only place that i feel like rivals lsu. huge crowd and they were up the whole game.
overall, i would pick athens every time
