I said last 40 just to keep it somewhat current. This defense is getting stronger with each week. We have not given up more than 11 since WVU. As long as the defense keeps this up, no one on the schedule can beat us.

Realistically, you have to go back to '69 (9.1 points per game) - 42 years, for the next argument. And that was at the cusp of an era change.

Your gut check was pretty spot on.

(ETA: Currently we're at a little under 10.9 points per game, trending downward, and will likely continue until at least Arky).

Fair enough but they haven't really played any AWESOME offenses during that time.

PJ, come on now? Oregon? WVU? Even Bama was averaging almost 40?

This is the best defense I've ever seen.

The two teams who scored over 11 (both scored over 20) were the two non SEC teams. Interesting.

Both nonconventional with a team focus on that side of the ball. Oregon scored 2 TDs late, after the game was already out of reach.

WVU made their surge in the 3rd QTR, when the game was still in doubt. Our bend-but-don't-break gameplan worked, but give WVU credit for taking a couple of opportunities when they had it. The gaudy yardage was, to a certain degree, by design. We didn't tackle well in that game, and WVU had a better plan than Oregon did, IMO (Oregon is a better team than WVU).

However, both teams also committed tons of turnovers and penalities - Oregon on a neutral field and WVU at their place.

The scores in those games belie the fact that we dominated on the defensive side of the ball, except late against Oregon when it didn't matter and in the third quarter when WVU made a rush and our passive gameplan led to half-a$$ed tackling (IMO).

It's the type of offenses LSU faced. My guess is Okie Light would be able to put a lot of points/yards on this defense as well, but the LSU offense would score more. Both of these offenses were built on superior skill position players, but inferior defenses.

YES and The ducks put up 27 and WVA put up 21. and there is no telling what Bama could have done had they made a few more FG'S. NOW I am not at all saying this isn't one of the best in LSU history. Just makin a point.

The Ducks scored 2 TDs late when the game was out of reach. We were playing 2nd/3rd teamers against a team whose last game was the BCS-CG. Their next game they scored 69.

WVU did make a surge in the 3rd, as I said above, but, overall the gameplan was sound - just the tackling was off (and it has been spotty this year - hopefully it's on against Arky, SEC-E and in the big game).

Those are anomalies - outliers you don't want to make evaluations on, solely. We're still averaging under 11 ppg allowed, counting all scores.

Peej if you're talking "what if's" that could've changed our defensive stats you cannot leave out the "what if" Oregon doesn't score two garbage TD's or the "what if" Auburn doesn't score a garbage TD.

That more than offsets the "what if" Bama made 3 field goals (52 yarder doesn't count cause that was dumb).

dke2
Defense---2003 vs 2011,(ETA 2007 also) a statistical comparison through 3 games

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The talent in 2003 was pretty good, technique was excellent.
2011 technique has been pretty good, talent is phenomenol.
I think this is the best defense I have ever seen at lsu. If they correct the mistakes they made tonight this will be one of the best defensive units of all time

Yeah. 11 points a game. We're under that (for now). Thus the discussion. ('69 was better the last of the old school defenses - shoulda got the opportunity to prove it against the Longhorns or Domers - we would have destroyed either, defensively, that year).
