I agree with a lot of the comments that most coordinators are gone in a few years - either because they becomes HCs or because they get fired. But there is another possibility that we never quite had at LSU for a number of reasons. Kelly could build a powerhouse, win a NC or 2 and hand off the program to a 48 year old Baker who, by 2030 could be one of the elite defensive minds in college football. With his family connections in LA he would be more likely to stay.

This is probably not the most likely scenario but it could happen. Because Kelly is not a CEO-type coach like Miles and Orgeron, his success does not depend on holding on to a top 3 coordinator on both sides of the ball every year to win. This brings stability long term. Kelly is a top 5 coach who is incredibly experienced but hungry to win a championship. His career horizon works out perfectly for a next generation elite HC in formation to be on staff.

What’s the likelihood of this playing out over a 15 to 20 year period? I don’t know, but I can see with Kelly in away I could not with Miles and Orgeron.

I’m usually a realist about these things but I’m feeling pretty optimistic this morning.

More likely best case scenario is Baker's success here gives him a head coaching job at a lower tier school, then he comes back when Kelly retires after multiple nattys. Same thing Kiffin is going to do at Bama.

I just said it could happen and I’m feeling optimistic. That best case scenario was never going to happen with Miles or Orgeron.

I agree that this scenario is a more likely positive future but it is not the best case scenario. Best case scenario is Blake never leaves and simply ascends.

I get it, but Baker obviously has an affinity for LSU. Best case scenario is that he goes off to become a HC at another P5 school, Kelly hires another DC, and when Kelly retires, Baker comes back and the whole staff stays intact. That would be the greatest outcome for continuity. Of course, there's probably a less than 1% chance of any of that happening.

Oh, the brakes are pumped. I’m a realist. I’m just feeling optimistic this morning and can see a long term positive future because of a combination of things that I haven’t seen in a while. We did not have this with Saban because he was too young and ambitious. We could have had it with Arnsparger but he was too old, underpaid and left prematurely. Kelly’s time horizon, hunger to win a national championship, and stability allows this scenario, even though not the most likely, to play out.

That is a great long term scenario, too, and you might be correct that this would be “best”.

Why do people always try to make “Coach in waiting” a thing?

Let's pump the breaks on hiring our next HC. We should just hope to have a defense somewhere around top 50 in the nation. Sadly that would be a dramatic improvement.

I jokingly started a HC in Waiting thread last night and it was whacked with the quickness.

Best long term scenario - Baker continues to grow and takes over when Kelly retires. Wins natty. Runs for office and becomes POTUS and is first to make alien contact. Turns out the aliens favorite team is LSU. Domination spreads.

Yea but I think he’s going to want to still call defensive plays as head coach. Thats RIDICULOUS! This is LSU! Baker should be able to recruit the best D coordinators in the country to come here!

It’s already affecting our 2033 recruiting class.

-The rant.
