Eades was dealing against UF in 2011 and Coach brought in Ott. I said at the time (before Ott blew the save) that Eades should have stayed in. Lester was one of many people after the game who defended the move. Ott had not been sharp in several outings before that weekend.
Yeah, I got into the same argument in the 2008 CWS game between UGA & Miami ( LINK), when I was laughing at the Canes for replacing Kyle Bellamy (the better relief pitcher and the guy who happened to be absolutely on fire since he was put into that particular game) with their annointed closer Carlos Gutierrez.
Gutierrez proceeds to blow a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th by giving up 4 runs, and then even after it happens and I say "I told you this would happen," I still get the "it was still the right move anyway" line. It pissed me off back in my earlier posting days.
The good part was that Miami & FSU went 0-4 against the rest of the field, which is always fun because, you know, the ACC doesn't have any CWS titles besides the one Wake Forest won in 1955.

I'd say Matty Ott with 33 saves. What say you?

MLB teams do it because of stats, contracts, and egos. The game was different before saves were kept as an official stat. And I think it's a mostly bogus stat.

If your "closer" is your best pitcher in the bullpen, why do you only use him in a save situation? If you need outs in a big situation in the 7th inning, why not bring in your best pitcher? It makes no sense.

I was staying at the Miami team hotel the first few nights of the 2008 CWS. Most of the Miami players were cocky jerks. It was nice to see them lose.

1) Rick Greene - hold the rope
2) Barry Manuel
3) Matty Ott - Freshman version 1.0
