Just saying. I wasnt a big guy(6'2", 195) and I was much stronger than one of the top tackles in the state?
All I'm saying is that if you were named top 5 by an outside source, someone is gonna have to work hard to keep people from noticing you. Even if it's scouts that are there to watch your opponents(have to be a few at 5A games)

I dont give a shite either way. I went to welsh highchool and we had very few people who were worth a shite and most of our linemen pushed over 250.

I agree that the bench is overrated...just saying

Top 5 in tackles =/= a top 5 tackle. Probably a lb or safety who made a bunch of tackles.

Any excercise that doesn't use the base and core muscles is not very functional for athletics.

Then you have NO IDEA how to lift properly. When done effectively, the press lifts are whole body lifts. I'm sure you knew that though....

I actually played Defensive End. I was only 5'11 200lbs. but I was pretty much used to stop the run. Actually they didn't allow our DE's to rush the QB at all. Which blows my mind.

Alem could have benefited from this approach.

First off, if you were a Top 5 in the state then scouts wouldn't be asking your coach if they had anyone worth watching. They would already know.

Second, who told you that you were a top 5 in the state?

Lsu players aren't big bench pressers, so I am guessing they know.

i wasnt talking to you ,,, and i agree "one exercise and you want the best translator to football strength, the Bench press is not it"

but no one can say that the bench press doesnt have its place it should be a test for the line and line backers ..that is a motion used every snap

Agree. I would take this further to include DB and receivers. These guys don't use this motion quite as much as linemen (or LB), but bench press strength is very useful for stalk blocking or shedding blockers.
Again, maybe not the most important lift, but important nevertheless.

Bench press is the most over rated lift out there. It does nothing for you but screw up your shoulders...

If you do not know how to bench properly, that is true....

The number 1 problem with bp is poor form (including: not warming up properly, slamming the weight off your chest, lifting your arse in the air, feet not stationary), the second is working out with too much weight (that's how you really screw up your shoulders). How often do I see spotters dead-lifting the weight off their partner's chest from the 1st rep on and saying, "good job man!"...??

BP is a fairly good indicator of overall, upper-body strength and is a universally known movement (unlike cleans) for any athlete. Cleans are a fast-twitch movement and an EXCELLENT exercise but isn't executed well by many people...

I do agree with the basis of this thread that core strength and stabilizers (balance) are essential...but so is cardio, flexibility, and well-rounded muscular strength in all areas...

He didn't say he was Top 5 at any position. He said he was Top 5 in tackles, which means he had the 5th most tackles in the state his senior yr in Class 5A

f you are an athlete and this is a major part of your workout, you are wasting your time and energy.

you most never have played oline. bench press builds your upper body and develops the brute strength needed to man handle someone. bench press is an overall measurement of how strong a person is. put someone in a wrestling match between one person that can only bench 180 vs. someone who benches 325 and see who wins that one everytime. bench press means a lot. if it didn't, don't you think the NFL would've thought of another way to measure someones strength?
