If you are an athlete and this is a major part of your workout, you are wasting your time and energy. I don't know why it is tested at the combine, and i don't know why the meatheads and retards on this board are so obsessed with it as an indicator of the quality of LSU's S&C program. Any excercise that doesn't use the base and core muscles is not very functional for athletics. This is lost on the bird-legged workout warriors.

That's piss poor paraphrasing.

You can strengthen more than a muscle group or two at a time without excluding you base and core muscles.

Also, If I want to run through you or tackle you, my legs back and stomach need to be strong. Chest would be way down the list.

Wild turkey is an idiot.

If you really wanted to evaluate overall strength, I'd throw in max reps of things like cleans

have you ever played organized football???? i doubt it. there is a reason that bench press, squats and cleans are fundamentals for S&C. Do you even lift weights... none of those are "isloation lifts" they all take a strong core

Bench press is the most over rated lift out there. It does nothing for you but screw up your shoulders, etc. 'Athletes' should be more focused on their natural motion using dumbells, etc. Most NFL players get totally away from any barbell type lifts. It's more of an 'ego' lift than anything.

Its to evaluate the upper body strength of the athlete. Believe it or not it helps if o and d lineman have powerfull chests. As far as everyone else it makes no sense.

Those hammer strength machines are better. Require leg and arm strength.

Cleans are the best workout to indicate total body strength IMO

It has to be due to a lesser chance of injury.

Can you imagine squatting 305 for max reps at a combine? Or cleaning 225 for max reps?

It's probably the biggest muscle group they can test which has the smallest chance of injury.

bullshite.
If you were top 5 in the state in 5A why are you not playing ball somewhere now?

And I benched 290 in my senior year and I only weighed 195 pounds.

I did bar bench for years, and the only time I have ever needed that motion for anything is flipping round bales out of the back of my truck when they're up against the cab.

You don't have to have organized football experience to understand that cleans are a better indicator for overall body strength and explosiveness than te bench press. I'm just saying that if you have to do just one exercise and you want the best translator to football strength, the Bench press is not it

yes, it Is an important exercise but it is not number 1

and yes, I do lift weights

1. I played at a school that I will not name. but lets just say that they didn't win a game in 3 straight seasons.

2. I did sign with a division 2 school, but I tore my rotators cuff and labrum tissue and had to have reconstructive surgery.

3. The school was too hard so I transferred to BRCC (no football team) and decided to give up on school and start working.

i wasnt talking to you ,,, and i agree "one exercise and you want the best translator to football strength, the Bench press is not it"

but no one can say that the bench press doesnt have its place it should be a test for the line and line backers ..that is a motion used every snap

Doesnt matter how many/few games your team lost. If you were named top 5 in the state at any position, scouts will be at games, if only just to see you play. And top 5 in the state of LA gets you McNeese/tulane/ULL attention at the very least.

did you bench 250 before or after this?

It would matter if you're coach turned away every scout that came into the front office saying, "no I don't have anyone worth watching."
This may sound fishy, but I had girls that work in the front office telling me this. & I don't think they would lie about something like this.

I graduated benching 250, but after one semester, my max went up to 295. Its amazing how much better College Weight Programs.

I'm sure you won't believe me on this, but I don't even care. I don't know who you are, so therefore I have nothing to prove. Just stating bench press is the most overrated workout.
