I think some are forgetting that Wes Johnson is a great pitching coach and is more like a Skip Bertman type evaluator and developer of pitching talent. He was brought to evaluate and develop pitchers. Trust in Wes.

We have to let go a catcher right?? I think Hayden is going to walk when it’s all said and done
Also, money barring mass improvement needs to be one to go. We saw enough last year, he doesn’t have the stuff. Gets hit waaaay to much to be in even in relief

They will be over the limit. I would think a couple have been talked to about redshirting but they will still be over. Was told it should come down to cutting about 2. But I don’t know how many have agreed to redshirt

I don't see Frey getting much playing time position wise
However, he does throw 90+ so maybe you see what he can do on the mound to help this year

I think Frey prob redshirts
Multiple people ahead of him at his positions (1B/DH/C)

I could see that. I'd really like to see him stick around because I think he's got a high ceiling. Big guys take longer to develop anyway, so I don't think a redshirt year would be either a bad thing or an indicator that he wouldn't play down the road.

I said it earlier in the thread but I would like to see him get some work in the corner OF positions. He is fast, especially for his size, with a big arm.
Not speaking for next season. Talking for future. I think a redshirt year will benefit him and also the team when it comes to getting the roster where it needs to be.

For those who have been to the fall scrimmages or have seen him play at all, how does Frey look against higher level pitching? Since he played a lot of football and also played in a low LA classification, I assume he didn't see as much good pitching compared to the baseball-only high schoolers who spend half their time on the travel circuit.

That was my main concern with him coming in. Felt like his transition would be a little tougher than some of the other guys who go to showcases and all. I do think he was on one of the Louisiana travel teams which was good competition. Also think he played in a summer league that may have helped him transition a little easier. Still think he likely has a lot of work and time to put in to be able to contribute for LSU.
Super excited about his future though. If he can develop and get into the swing of things then his potential is really good.

He’s like 4 for 25 with 12ks. So not great

What jumps out about him is his size and movement skills for a big guy.
Has looked like a freshman at the plate.

Listened to Jay a little on Hunt and Hill yesterday in the background ( I say this to recommend going back and listening to it yourself cause I wasn’t 100% tuned in). Still, a couple of things that stood out:
1) Skenes—said he looks like a MLB pitcher right now as far as size, stuff, and the way he carries himself (said some of that could be attributed to playing for a military academy). Said he’s bat has adjusted faster to SEC pitching than they anticipated, so he’s ahead of schedule there
2) Edwards has developed a slider and change and has made the biggest and most noticeable jump of anybody on the staff (I think he mentioned Floyd as maybe the 2nd guy)
3) Morgan is healthy and has put on 12-15 pounds and will continue to have competitive ABs like he always has, but is better at not missing mistakes. Seems like he’s gonna be like me and a few others predicted to wind up being a 10-15 home run guy
4) Specifically asked about Dugas, he kinda downplayed him again. Talked about his leadership and versatility and all that, but doesn’t seemed convinced that he’s one of the best 9/10 right now
5) Said he’s been working hard on IF defense and is impressed with White as 3rd. Stays low and has good range for his size and a good arm. He didn’t mention his body, but I have to think with 4-5 months before games start, with that foundation, they should be able to transfer his body enough to more than trust to hold down 3rd all season. Also causally mentioned the strikeouts they expect will make it easier on the defense. Less opportunities to make errors if every other batter is turning around and walking back to their dugout.
6) Dylan Crews is right there with Kris Bryant as the best players he’s had regarding tools and just preparation
7) Said will always love and appreciate last year’s team, specifically Reyz and Gervase—singled out Hilliard for stepping up big time and them winning 9 out of his 10 SEC starts (or 8 of 9). BUT, there is no comparison talent-wise to where this team is now compared to last year’s. Mentioned a guy like Shores, for example, is probably a Friday night guy eventually, but may be hard to find him a role early in the season.
Just dudes up and down the roster and excited to see them compete for the few spots available. Gonna be a really fun season.

If I remember correctly this comment was referring to Grant Taylor, not Edwards. Edwards has struggled a good bit this fall.

You are absolutely right. That’s 100% on me. Won’t even edit, just hope people keep reading to your post.

Definitely Taylor. He could easily be a weekend starter or perhaps the "high leverage" situation guy for this team.
As some have said previously, if the season started this weekend this would be my weekend rotation.
Fri. Skenes
Sat. Taylor
Sun. Floyd
Hurd coming along could get one of those spots.

I would think with Hurd’s back, it’ll be tough to get him throwing in relief. I’d want to warm him up knowing he was throwing and give plenty of time to recover. May be for that reason alone that we make him a starter when healthy.

If Hurd is ready, he'll be a weekend starter with Skenes. Taylor and Floyd are probably being looked at as the 3rd. I think Taylor having some high leverage relief experience will inevitably push him to a stopper or closer. Floyd's experience is mainly as a starter.
If Hurd still isn't completely ready, I wouldn't overlook him as a stopper or closer. He doesn't have experience there, but he has the makeup.
I'm interested to see what they do with Shores. He's next up. I suspect they'll use him as needed on the weekend but start him during the week if he doesn't get much action there. That would be ideal, meaning we aren't using alot of arms on the weekend.
Still early.

Very easy to watch pitch count of the starter or middle relief guy, then get Hurd going for entrance at a specific juncture. Agree that recovery would be an issue, so he wouldn't be used multiple times per week...but maybe we don't need him multiple times per week. If not ready to be a starter(i.e. give you 70+ pitches), they'll have to sequence carefully around him. But, very doable. I don't want to see a committee approach. Just because he's not ready for 70+, I don't want them sitting him, though.
