LOL at you.

I don’t personally care what any coach makes. It’s not my money.

But this whole shadow staff/player personel department going from non-existent to million dollar salaries in less than a decade is a bit silly.

That’s is double the NFL average for a similar position.

Player personnel salaries

quote:

Let's break down a typical structure with average Salaries per position: Director of Player Personnel: $455,000 Director of college scouting: $275,000 Pro Personnel Director: $250,000 Assistant to Pro director: $95,000 7 area scouts: $95,000 per scout on average. Total: $665,000 Assistant/administrative: $60,000 Miscellaneous assistant: $45,000

The whole scouting budget for an NFL team is $2-3 million. You want to pay 1 guy $1 million?

So in this case, The Organizer, has to act as a sales manager. And Saban has literally brought business principles into the recruiting arena. Above is simply a recruiting version of Constant Contact or Lead Simple. The goal is to maintain relationships via contacts, and is a way to maintain that contact in a grey area that the NCAA isn't covering.

The job of the The Organizer is to oversee it; make sure it stays in bounds, train the person making the call, record the data that the contact was made, etc.

You and I were actually going back and forth about this very post MOT (not in a bad way).

Brilliant post, and a great read. Thanks for sharing. I absolutely believe this stuff happens, and any edge garnished is worth having.

We need progressive thinkers and strategies like these on our staff. College football success is moving more towards a big business approach. I think Saban even has a psychologist meet with his players to understand them, motivate them and keep their heads on straight(well as straight as possible.)

Enjoyed the insight, thanks man

Obviously not to many read the link on your last post. Austin Thomas probably works harder than anyone in the athletic office. Yes, he deserves a raise. Coach O isn’t letting him leave though, unless it for the NFL. He’ll pay him out of his pocket if need be.

It seems Coach O is good at spotting talent whether it be on the field or not. He’s not as dumb as everyone thinks. He hires people around him that are smart, organized people who excel at what his dificienies are. After reading that, I have a pretty good idea of who prepared the binder.

Like coaches, TAF (or private funding in general) makes up the lion's share of that salary. $1 MM would not come from public coffers. Only about $125k. And yes, right now he's getting the majority of his pay privately, not just the publicly listed $125k.

Any idea of a ballpark? Any details on if he is happy and/or planning on leaving for any reason?

Thanks in advance

Exactly. The naysayers in this thread just havent read up on Austin Thomas. He is as important as any on the recruiting side/operations.

He builds strategies - if player A and player B are equal talents and both have strong interest in LSU, A.T. will do his homework and take the commitment of player A because that player is best friends with another 4/5 star talent but is only a sophomore instead of a junior.

Austin schedules visits, plans logistics, does background checking, kills it in the film room, and builds a great rapport with prospective student athletes. He is elite in relationship building, talent evaluation, organization skills and strategizing.

I think he, Corey Raymond, Cerebro (Aranda), and Will Wade are the most valuable coaches in the big 3 sports.

Out of everyone I have met during the recruiting process of my player, Austin is by far the most intuitive and impressive guy on the staff.

You still seem unable to grasp the concept of market value

No, you don't. Where is the market? Colleges compete with NFL teams for personnel. I just listed competitive salaries IN THE MARKET for similar positions. All you are doing is saying how much you think he is worth. How much are similar positions at other schools being paid?

I want Austin to make as much money as he can. If there is a market for him to make $1 million, then I am happy for him. I am a capitalistic, free-market guy. I just don't believe that market exists at this present time.

What player personnel staff make in the NFL and whether you believe the market exists, is irrelevant. Unless you have insider insight as to the goings on with college football hirings, you have no idea whether there are other schools out there trying to pry away Thomas. For example, if the rumors of Tennessee willing to offer him substantially more than we are currently paying him are true, there is your market.

So actual competitive salaries are irrelevant, but rumors are proof.

Again, what do other schools pay their version of Austin Thomas?

And what is a "substantial" raise that is rumored?

There's only two GM's in CFB. He's the tip of the spear... so we're talking more of value in the term "market value".

And do remember NCAA and budgetary limitations. AT is doing several of those jobs you mentioned for NFL teams all rolled into one. So from one standpoint you can just add those up and estimate the market.

You don’t know what he does compared to an NFL personnel director.

I hope Austin gets as much as he can. I was laughing at the guy suggesting he should be paid $1 million. Then others laughed at me laughing at that. LOL.

You could hire two NFL personnel directors for that kind of money. That’s more than Tosh Lupoi makes. More than Frank Wilson makes. More than Corey Raymond makes.

I would be shocked if Austin gets more than $300k for his current job, even from competitive suitors like Tennessee. I would be thrilled for Austin, but surprised.

That link is from last year, so yeah, if my memory serves me right, he went from like 110k to 125 or 140 max, but still well underpaid for what he deserves.

He left for the General Manager position at USC. I am sure he got more money too but that much is in one of the articles. A big part of him coming back was getting that with us. I'm sure O and Frank being here didn't hurt either.

More money to pay to people that don't deserve it (Alleva, Orgeron).
