If anything you should be happy that jay continued to go back to him after the shite at bats he was having
Last year, Larson batted better in SEC games than he did in non-conference games. Larson led the entire team last year in batting average in SEC games. This year, Larson had ONE plate appearance in SEC games before tonight. He didn't forget how to play baseball. He's been buried behind
Speaking of shite at bats... are you saying there hasn't been a reason before today to give Larson a chance??? B/c this is what the team looks like against SEC pitching coming into tonight. There are a couple of guys at the bottom of that list that keep getting chance after chance after "shite at bats"
Batting Average / OBP
Chris Stanfield . 360 / .448
Derek Curiel .323 / .425
Michael Braswell III .308 / .455
Daniel Dickinson .296 / .449
Tanner Reaves .294 / .429
Luis Hernandez .286 / .322
Jake Brown .263 / .341
Jared Jones .254 / .315
Steven Milam .231 / .313
Josh Pearson .225 / .333
Ethan Frey .222 / .300

he had 1 hit in his last 13 AB.
Friendly reminder: before tonight, Frey was 1 for 16 the last two weekends and batted second in the lineup. I'm a fan of Frey and I like to see him in the lineup. But it's crazy in here that people think Larson has had as many chances as everyone else.

A thread a few days ago someone said “I don’t think Larsons time is done here and he’s still going to make an impact this year” or something like that.
Dude nailed it. This buds for you pal.

We are now getting to the better teams in the SEC with better pitching. Larson may have been slumping but he proved that he can hit SEC pitching last year.

Larson will no doubt get more ABs against righties going forward but it is no mystery why he's had a hard time seeing the field.
He is limited defensively and hasn't done much in his opportunities this year. He's going to have to knock the cover off the ball to put either Pearson or Brown on the bench. I'm pulling for him because bringing him back for his junior year would be massive and before last night seemed impossible.

Have you been watching the games? We have more starter talent than positions on the field.
Terrible thread.

quote:I mean, it sucks for Larson that he plays like arse against midweek teams while all of his competition is better. Btw, Larson was better than a lot of people last year in all games, not just SEC. He didn't suck in midweek games like he had this year.

He didn't earn at bats this year compared to his competition like he did last year. He's had about 12 shitty at bats and a home run now in his most recent appearances.

Frey is hitting .370 with 8 homers
Larson is hitting just above the Mendoza line.
Great on Larson for coming through and hopefully that jump starts a run for him, but let’s pump the breaks. Frey has been really good. But I’m all for Larson getting LH AB’s vs righties over Reaves.

We can't base this purely on statistics.
Frey had a good night. So did Larson. Frey is in the lineup because he gives us another power hitter in a lineup that doesn't hit a lot of homeruns. That's the most likely reason he's there.
As someone else has pointed out, he has hit the ball hard on a number of occasions, but the ball has just gone straight into someone's glove. Over the course of the season, those odds should even out.
If you want to use statistics, then he is our BEST hitter for the season. Highest average and highest slugging percentage. He hits a higher percentage of homeruns than Jared Jones and strikes out less than Derek Curiel.
The SEC season has a long ways to go. Larson earned some more chances last night, but the only two spots for him are left field and DH. We have Brown, Pearson, Frey, and Larson competing for time. Given the way Jay likes to play L/R matchups, I could see him platooning Frey and Larson based on pitching matchups, in order to give Ashton some more ABs. My gut tells me that CJJ wants Frey to get more comfortable playing every day because he adds more pop to the lineup. Larson is comparable to Brown and Pearson another above average left handed bat.
The bottom line is you have 4 guys playing 2 spots and Frey has an advantage because he is the only guy with plus plus power potential and is potentially the best hitter out of all of them.
It is what it is, and I wish there were more at bats for them. Hopefully all of them contribute, going forward.

Frey has been really good.
Before last night, he had not been good at all against SEC pitching, hitting around 0.220. He’s up to .250 after last night’s game. Maybe now he gets it going but prior to his last couple of ABs last night, he looked over matched against SEC arms and his stars reflected that.

I am actually in agreement here. Larson was too good last year to not even be getting looks really. Came up huge last night and gave the offense a much needed boost. Why not run him out there again?
