I am most worried about our linebackers. My reasoning is we lose Shep (big and can run), Baker and Stephen Fran are small but after watchin that ole miss game again not sold on. We open with Oregon who has speed do we have some young LB's that would make me sleep better as I look forward to next year.

OLINE

If it doesn't improve dramatically, we are in for a long year.

Minter is expected to be a very solid player

honestly i think we see maybe loston or reid to step in at LB. 3 safeties and only two spots one will probably move to get talent on the field

minter, baker, francios is a nasty tandem.

reid, loston, taylor, t rex, mo claiborne

Big sam, downs, ke ke, brockers, pep, chauncey agahayre.

And maybe davenport will finally do something with his 5 star career.

I think the LBs and DEs had a really really bad year. I was worried about Francois in the summer, and everybody assured me that he would be a "stud." Well, apparently I was right to worry.

Sheppard reverted back to some old bad habits in terms of allowing himself to get blocked in the north-south power running game.

Baker was good, but got sucked into the inside too much on runs.

I really think that the LB unit can't get much worse, even though we're losing the leader of the defense in Sheppard, who I admire very much.

I'm not really worried about the LB position going forward, because I think we have too many people waiting to fill the void, including Lamin Barrow, who I thought looked great in the UNC game.

In addition to Francois, Baker, & Barrow, we've got these guys on the current roster:

quote:

46 Kevin Minter (Fr.)
10 Nick Rice (Fr.)
58 Tahj Jones (Fr.)
56 Seth Fruge (Fr.)
54 Justin Maclin (Fr.)
52 Luke Muncie (Fr.)
31 D.J. Welter (Fr.)
48 Jarrett Hardnett (So.)
39 Josh Johns (Fr.)

I've got to believe that some of these guys will step up big as sophomores.

Come to think of it, maybe I am worried about the LB position next year.

Biggest thing on defense is that the D-line needs to step up, though, especially the DE position.

The good thing is that only 3 of 15 D-linemen on the roster are seniors (Nevis, Levingston, & Nixon), but the other players still have to step up.

I think Brockers, Davneport, & Downs will succeed at DT, but the DE position this season was a near calamity. Aghayere, Edwards, Mingo, & Adams have simply got to get much much better. Maybe Montgomery & Ferguson can pick up some of the slack next year ... I don't know.

I think we'll see a more complete defense next year. Certainly not with the leadership we experienced this year but youth will no longer be a problem. Our guys will be experienced. So those big plays won't be as much of a factor for us.

Sheppard will be the biggest loss. He's a coach on the field for our defense. We'll have leaders step up for sure, I just don't think we'll have that much experience that he brough on the field either.

But like I said we should have a much more complete unit.

All I know is that even with another year to hit the weight room and mature physically, I still don't want Aghayere, Edwards, Mingo, or Adams in the game to defend against the run. The thought of it makes me worry.

How well LSU's defense does next year is going to depend a whole lot on Montgomery and Ferguson I think, although I still have hope that Adams and Edwards can step up their games defending the run. As a fan, I'm close to giving up on hoping that Aghayere and Mingo will turn into great players on the D-line. I think that maybe Mingo needs to get moved to OLB or something.

Yeah Mingo doesn't need to be on the D Line. What about this guy "The Freak" Johnson? He isn't a D Lineman is he? Sorry I am not 100% familiar with our incoming recruits.

Yeah, I'm just not a recruit-follower by nature. I don't like being a fan of LSU football players until they actually show up for camp in August. I think I've gotten excited about Josh Booty (please don't laugh!) and Russell Shepard before they actually arrived, but that's about it. I really don't like the recruiting side of CFB.

I disagree, Shep is a hell of a linebacker and we may not see another like him for a while (hopefully I'm wrong), but this is nitpicking on your part.

As for next year, LB concerns me the most. Lots of talent at DL (depth a problem) and especially at DB. If Reid can learn the coverages he could be really special. I'm not sold on TM's coverage, but he is an animal on the blitz/nickel.

It's not nitpicking at all. Our LBs are pretty good in running down defenders, but they are not very good at taking on blockers in the power running game. This is not a minor detail. It's a pretty big deal.

Sheppard was great because he was a team leader who could direct the other LBs because he was the only one who had significant experience playing all 3 positions. But he was simply not very good at taking on blockers.

He had a horrible day in Starkville in 2009, bounced back from that and got much better, but then reverted back to some of his old weaknesses late this year (such as the Arkansas game last weekend).

He's a DT and he'll see the field next year.

So he had two bad games and now he has trouble taking on blockers?

I'll agree to disagree, but still DL biggest worry next year.

i was thinking the opposite...we got good DE play, nevis was the only one good at DT...

we need better DT's

This is where "the freak" comes in...I believe he will make a big impact as a freshman, he is a very phyiscally matured guy...

DE were solid, with Sam back and Mingo beefing up again, we'll be fine...Edwards and Adams are getting better, aghyare is ok, and i still dont rule out Clowney from coming

Ferguson is being moved to DT, he and the freak will have an impact, as well as the other freshman from WMonroe, Allen, most forgot about him and he's put on some serious weight...
I think Brockers, Allen, the Freak and Ferguson will do well at DT...

LB's we should be worried, minter and barrow are EXTREMELY overated, baker is the only one we have and he is undersized....Maclin will step up at Mike and become the next bradie james, he is that good, and I believe Welter will beat out francois, and also look out for duplesis to move to LB...guys a player....

I think at LB it all depends on how Maclin will do...

Well this is true, but Nevis sort of picked up the slack for both positions.

We'll see about Barrow. I think he can be a great player at WLB, but I admit that we'll just have to wait until next year to know for sure. I could be overrating him.

O.C. is the area of biggest concern to me. Crowton returns - I'm very concerned. New O.C., not as concerned.
