OMG!

Feels like three and out to the NFL to me. Hope he does well and we benefit from it! Time will tell.

I'm not saying he was hired to be coach in waiting. Instead, from what others around sports are saying and his spectacular record, he appears to be a high impact, young guy - like Fisher is, and Herman, Smart, Jeff Brahm who might turn out to be great college coaches. Time will tell. Les knows that he is on his last LSU contract with 3-4 max year left at LSU, and yes, he, like other people in leadership positions, want to have a succession plan with one of their guys to be in position to take over, and continue their legacy. I'm pretty sure that Les thinks like this.

Miles isn't even close to retirement age. How do y'all dream this shite up?

Les is not ready to retire, but I'm pretty sure that his goal to win another championship, and/or complete the 4 years at LSU, then do something else-TV-AD, Pros.......... He'll be 65 when his contract expires and that would be a good separation point. Of course, he needs to get back to a championship game or two.

Or field a good defense so he can continue to run his same predictable offense

... I hope not.

Not a fan of "coach in waiting.". Also, I'd rather he leave and get his first head coaching experience somewhere else, then come take over when Miles leaves.
In a perfect scenario, yes, but you willing to take that gamble that he comes back?

wish Texas would've never coined the phrase "coach in waiting."

Very overused and never right.

Jerry Sandusky and Penn St. agree with you.

Isn't that the same as what was posted here about Cam?

fricking guy hasn't coached a game at LSU, but he is the coach in waiting.

Exactly, which is why this is a crappy thread. The only reason this hire feels any different is because it's a great hire. Stop pulling thoughts out your butt.

While he has not set foot on campus, recruited his first player, or coached or won his first LSU game, the lightning strike of getting him on board, paying top dollar, removing the 'Les Clause', all points to Les and Alleva picking him off as a young potential rock star that could be given the keys the Tiger Football Car in a few years if his defenses perform. Of course, it is "waaaaay" too early for any of this, but this hire sure does have a different feel to it.

I'm not a big fan of this. Les is 62. If you find a guy you think can take over in a few years, you keep him and groom him on staff.
If the guy turns out to be a desirable property in a couple of years (as the press seems to indicate he will be), why let him go, and then risk a bidding war to get him back from somewhere else?

I get your point. The issue will be who else is available and what experience those candidates have. Not so sure you give the reins of a program like LSU to a guy who has never held those reins any where. (See Mike Archer)
