Thank you, AL.com blogger, for bringing this important issue to our attention:

LINK

I'm looking for the Gary Danielson quote about the LSU defense that he referenced, that "they look the part, but don't play the part" but can't find it anywhere on the interwebs.

I'm just curious to see what else Danielson said or what context it was originally in; anybody have a source?

There is a lot of fail in that article, and it's not just in the grammar or the inability to distinguish "effect" from "affect."

that was pretty bad. No different than a "post" on a message board.

its ok, that article was written by a tard who doesn't know the difference between the words "affect" and "effect"

quote:

Not only did they effect their play

and who also neglects that were it not for two garbage, late-game touchdowns LSU would be leading the SEC in scoring defense. I really don't think there is a statistic which is more telling of a defense's success than points other teams score!!!!!

effect is a noun

"It had an effect on me"

affect is a verb

"It affects all of us"

that guy's comments aren't that far off base. He's not the typical homer.

Danielson was referring to our D-Line i believe. He was definitely not talking about the entire defense.

locker room material. Chad Jones, Kelvin Sheppard, Harry Coleman's, Rahim Alem and others eyes will light up once they see this.

BTW hasn't our defense progressed each week in ranking. Aren't we like down to 20 something down from 40 something last week.

Sometimes using statistics to provide an insight on how a team should perform provides a lot of false positive results. At other times they can be used as a clear indicator of just how a unit will perform.

translation...I'll use the sacks stat to gain insight on LSU's defense, but I won't use the points-per-game stat

If our defense is so bad, why did we shut out Tulane and Alabama allowed a touchdown to North Texas?

Or our defense only allowed 13 points to Florida and Alabama allowed 14 to Florida International?

I agree, and LSU & Bama are very even right now. LSU has allowed 97 pts in 7 games
Bama has allowed 91 pts in 8 games

This game will be an offensive stuggle for both teams.

I think it was said during the MSU game or even earlier when they did have some issues. Playing lights out now.

Two things he loves to ignore in his comparisons:

While Vandy and MSU don't rank highly in passing rankings, they've also played much harder schedules then almost anyone in Bama's schedule. Furthermore, he lovingly omits Auburn (top offense other than UF) and UF itself. Sure, we haven't played Arkansas yet.

Anyone who has seen LSU's defense knows its improved watching the last few games. UF's lone TD came on a BS play, that's pretty impressive.

LSU is also top FOUR in the NATION in redzone defense, and Bama doesn't even score a TD when in the redzone 1 out of every two times they are there (16 TDs in 38 possessions).

LSU's rushing defense has struggled but mainly against option teams. More traditional running teams like BAMA (UGA and Auburn) got shut down completely by LSU.

Also, Take out the FIRST game of the year and look at LSU's stats from then on. He lovingly forgets to mention how they were learning a completely new scheme this year.

Ya, and now we hear that Bama's really got a good offense, but they were just tired against Tenn. Give me a freak'n break.

Each can also be verbs/nouns, respectively.

You can "effect" change, for example.
