At beginning of one of the practice videos lsu released, a player had #9 on. Surely G-String didn't let the unthinkable happen.

Likely scout team. FSU rb #9 rushed for 100 yards yesterday.

yep. We as fans tend to not pay an incredible amount of attention to numbers other than figuring out who is who when the do something good/bad.

But in game prep they are practicing substitutions/decision trees. If a specific player lines up in one place vs. another you may change your alignment based on that. Or communicate a post-snap adjustment.

This is why the NCAA has some very oddly strict rules for numbers and jerseys with fairly stiff penalties (i.e. unsportsmanlike). It isn't to help the broadcast booth out.

Two measures of a coaching staff's attention to detail (i.e. tells you something about the staff as a whole) I've always had:
1. Does special teams do lineup/personnel checks (by noting numbers) religiously? That's how you guard against fakes and onside kicks and such. E.g. Did they slip a different holder in? Did 3 WRs show up where it used to be defensive personnel on KO coverage?

2. Does the defense check, every damn play, AND communicate eligibility in relation to LoS/covered up for all receivers. You'd be surprised how often back 7 get tricked by this w/decoys (or mistakes by the offense).

He clearly meant an additional #7 on someone not expected to be wearing #7.
