Anybody hear Moscona talking about a way to prevent opt outs in college football?

I heard just a little bit on the radio but for those who heard it, was he talking about players making money off of their name and likeness?

Essentially yes. Talked about making money off of their social media accounts as influencers and stuff like that. I personally have no problem with it. If a college kid can make some scratch on social media doing personalized shout outs or pushing an event, venue or product, more power to em.

I don't know. But you can easily go to the 104.5 YouTube page and click directly on the part you're talking about.

can we all just stop calling it opting out? it's quitting, as in 'I quit' I was on the team, and now i'm not because 'I quit'; if they actually had to say publicly 'I quit' instead of this woke-arse alternative terminology, maybe less would 'quit'

they get a pass this year,I guess, w/ covid, but next year we go back to the more accurate terminology

The success of your inquiry faces challenges. First - Finding people who listen to Moscona and are willing to admit it; and second - identifying the subset of that group who not only listened to Moscona but also understood him. Good luck with that.

I think NIL kicking in helps reduce kids leaving early. They will be able to market themselves and get paid and any great marketer knows that bowl games make money. Also, those big time players using NIL to generate money will be able to purchase insurance policies to cover slippage if due to injury. Many people dislike the NIL but I think its great for the sport and will take care of a few issues college football is fighting at the moment.

I always wonder how other athletes in non revenue generating sports or not high profile players would react to this. I’d expect most understand it, but I’d imagine there would be some jealousy if your classmates/teammates are making a lot of money and you aren’t.

Guys aren't opting out so they can get endorsements.

Sounds good but a little scratch isn’t stopping them from making millions in the nfl

Would be the death of college football as we know it. Players would flock to big markets like LA where the opportunities are greater unless you cap the earning potential.

I completely agree. It will be really good for all college athletes. One of the 247 podcasts was talking about it this summer. People from smaller schools and even D2 and D3 will be able to run camps and clinics and make some money off of their sport in their smaller communities. They won’t get rich, but athletes at that level don’t even have scholarships. Making anything will be a big boost for them.

As for big-time P5 guys, the good thing for schools is that sponsor money will be tied to being on TV and in sports news. If guys opt out for an entire year, they will lose visibility and lose some of that income. That won’t deter the best of the best, but it should be enough to keep all but a few on the field for 3 full years. And they will be well compensated for it without a Title IX meltdown.

Top college players will be able to pull in 6 figures plus whatever the school gives them. It may not be NFL money, but it makes a lot more sense to stay for your 3rd or even 4th year to shoot for that better draft grade and the real payday on your first contract if you are already making some real money.

Not at all. Social media is everywhere and college football players are more marketable where the sport is most popular. That isn’t LA. It’s in the southeast.

How would that prevent opt outs? Whatever money they can make on the side doesn't change the fact that they can make more in the NFL. Only way to truly prevent opt outs is if they're contract employees, which they'll never be in college.

Just like LSU quit on the defensive tackle who had been committed to them for over a year now we just “lost a commitment from” because he was told to “look elsewhere”.

Funny, I don’t see any of you trying to sling your “insults” at LSU for “opting out” of the scholarship offers to these committed players.
