Because it's a discussion I find repugnant.
Not funny. Not thoughtful. Just FYI.

I think some of these JL fans start a lot of sentences with, "Now I'm not racist BUT... "

this is the only explanation for people who still claim flynn was smarter than JR

remember, JR was the best QB in CFB in 2006

SFP, I'd claim you were smarter than JR (and Matt Flynn),

and I'd say those things all the while remembering that JR was the best QB in CFB in 2006.

But I'd also bet that despite intellect, either MF or JR would eat your lunch reading an SEC defense from behind center. It's not about being smarter. Brilliant people make stupid decisions and respond differently under pressure.

So counselor, let review the facts. I'd hope we could stipulate the following:

(1) JR was higher regarded than MF out of HighSchool
(2) JR was taller
(3) JR had far better arm strength
(4) JR and MF were roughly the same speed
(5) JR was regarded as a probable 1st Round NFL pick
(6) In ’03, Saban felt it necessary to redshirt JR despite tremendous physical attributes.
(7) In ’04, Saban chose to start Marcus Randall (perhaps on of the least talented LSU QBs ever) in front of JR.
(8) In ’05-06, Fisher/Miles considered the MF-JR Fall Practice competition so tight they wouldn’t name a starter until the first game (for 2 years running)

Flynn was less athletic, had a weaker arm, was less heralded, had less upside potential but still impressed two coaching staffs enough to give JR a run for his money. So either Saban, Miles, and Fisher were all racists or MF did something better than JR to compensate for all the above deficits. I hope we can agree to take the former proposition out of consideration. The latter begs the question as to what could close the huge gap between JR and MF in #’s 1-5 above to keep MF competitive? The answer --- decision-making.

Do you people seriously want JL to start over JJ or RS? Did everyone watch the same Peach Bowl I watched? Like where the one JJ made consistent throws the WHOLE game, made great decisions and acted though as a leader?

I think this might be my first "called out" post since I've been a member and I must say, I think I'm about to tear up.

eta: Thanks for the well thought out rebuttal to my statement. FWIW, if Lee is in charge of the offense this year it will ONLY be because JJ or Shep are either dead or close to it. I saw enough in two games as a TRUE FRESHMAN to know I don't want to see Lee out there this year. I'm not saying he's dumb or a bad person or any of that shite. I'm saying when it comes time to put 11 on the field I don't want him to be one of them as long as we have JJ and Shep. Lee just doesn't fit into our system AT ALL.

that had nothing to do with making sure Flynn didn't transfer in the off-season either wink wink

And for anybody to say why dont you think JL will develop into a good player that he was young and thrown into the season not ready as a frashman. Yes i agree he was thrown into the season unprepared. Yes players do get better as they progress throughout their career. But this kid showed NO improvement through the whole season not even a little bit. Thats why I believe JJ is our man.

Yeah, JJ has been extremely impressive. And based off Lee's performance last year, I don't think there's any way he can beat out JJ for the starting position.

BUT, lots of growth happens on the practice field, and these kids are still developing their game. With Lee's raw talent, who knows what can happen with time. And you have to admit that the kid didn't fold, even when it seemed like every Tiger fan wanted his head last year. I've got to respect that kind of determination.

That may be the biggest problem with him, because I don't buy that he doesn't have what it takes to succeed as QB somewhere.

I think we're pretty lucky as fans to have the stable of QBs we've got, even though they're largely unproven. Best of luck to whoever wins the starting spot.

Raw talent where in the world did you see any raw talent on the field by him? I would love to know because i didnt see much "RAW TALENT". And yes i believe he folded when he was throwin pick 6s left and right.

He showed a strong arm and did make some good throws into tight coverage. And then he'd turn around and throw up a duck on the next play. But I saw some bright spots. And it seemed to me that the kid kept trying, 90000+ booing fans or not.

I'm not saying he deserves the starting job after last year, but I'm not ready to throw him under the bus yet either. I've just seen a lot of athletes overcome adversity and surprise people, that's all.

In the end, it doesn't matter much what our opinions are anyway. The coaches get paid for that. And they thought he looked good enough to offer, and good enough to get a shot last year. Who knows?

Anyway, any insider news on players from camp?

To be honest, I think JL has a better chance in the NFL as a QB than JJ and RS. He was only a red shirted FR, played only 2 years in HS as a QB, and will have 3 more years to improve on his reads.

JL could be a Dan Marino in the future (quick release, no mobility).

Troy Aikman sucked as a rookie in Dallas and he is a Hall of Famer now. Don't count Lee out yet. The kid bleeds purple and gold, ya'll.

Give him a chance.

agree He was a freshman. Freshmen, especially freshmen quarterbacks, tend to take a while to adjust to the speed of the game and recognize what is happening around them quickly enough to avoid errors. So no surprise that he seem to have improved. And yes, Jefferson seems to have learned defenses a little quicker, but that is not a knock on Lee, just a plus for Jefferson.

Anybody remember when all the fans were begging for Booty (white) to be put back in after Rohan (black) became the starter?

Yeah, I don't either.

This whole thing seems as simple to me as the "what have you done for me lately" syndrome. I promise that if JJ struggles the first couple of games 90% of the people sucking his balls right now will be calling for Russell Shepherd. Why? Believe it or not, it's not because he's white (he's not white by the way). It's because he was recently a very good QB. No matter that it was on a high school team.
