From what I have gathered here is what happened:

Tennessee’s coach was charged with a mound visit. It’s recorded in the official play by play.

But the college rule is you don’t have to change pitchers on the second visit immediately. You can let him finish the batter he is facing.

The Tenn pitcher got Larson out and he was relieved the next inning.

After the inning you could see another Tennessee coach explaining to Vitello what he had done.
Teaching moment but never got the repercussion of the mistake.

Should have had to take out the pitcher.

Fuk em we still won and it was Glorious

CJJ has repeatedly explained his offensive time outs . They are perfectly legal & I have seen other HC's call them as well. You are just more aware of
CJJ's...because....I suppose....you watch more LSU games. And then there is TV's coaching persona, well earned over the years. He knew what he was doing, notice how fast he turned around without a word when told to move off .He knew what he was doing.

It was as if the umpire “saved” Vitello.

Actually, it looks like the 2nd base ump "saved" us from a loss. Look what happened after he didn't have to change pitchers.

He did have to change pitchers. The rule is your pitcher gets to finish pitching to the batter at the plate but a change must be made for the next batter. Larson popped out for the third out so the change came in the next inning.

This was Jay's explanation in the post game interview last night. This was what the umps were talking to the league office about and was why Jay was upset...they were giving Tennessee's relievers extra time to warm because they had to check on the rule. If it had happened before the AB started, I think Tennessee would've had to make a change.

I stand corrected. Still worked out for the best for us. I went to bed after 7, couldn't sleep so I started watching again after Tenn went ahead 3 - 0.

I woke up this morning thinking it all was a dream, until I checked the score three times.
