1. There are a lot of backhanded compliments in those quotes.

2. There is no way that I would give off-the-record comments on other coaches if I were a head coach. It seems so pointless and chickenshit. Who care what other coaches think of our coach? His successes (and failures) will be on full display for all to see, in real time.

3. The narrative that "the job" is responsible for the success of the team is bullshite. There is enough recent and consistent evidence of powerhouse schools falling into mediocrity, that this cannot be a credible argument for discounting a coach's success (wherever they coach). I lived through an entire decade of being an LSU fan in which we had more losing seasons than winning seasons, including seasons where we went 2-9 and 3-8.

Dave Aranda is a consistently good coach — as good of a defensive coordinator as there is in the SEC,” an opposing coach said, anonymously. “They're good defensively, but really, by their standards... not great."

Ummm.....so what defensive coordinators have we had that have fielded better defenses than Dave Aranda?

Somebody earlier said Chavis. Chavis had decent ones but I’d take Aranda every day of the week over Chavis.

Ok, who are you arguing with? Everyone here said we'd take Gundy over Miles.

LSU doesn't always do a good job evaluating,

This is simply not true.

Les Miles and company had a long record of finding diamond in the rough players. Brandon Lafell, Morris Claiborne, Tyrann Mathieu, Lavar Edwards, Bennie Logan, Russell Gage, etc, etc, etc.

Yep that is the only reason anyone knew who Miles was

Chavis had the number 2 defense one year. He was incredible while at LSU but the last minute drives to Bama did him in and the 3rd and Chavis...if everyone is honest what has been Arandas weakness? Pretty much the same thing. ND and A&M did what Bama and clemson did. I love Aranda I’m just giving facts...Chavis had some great defenses at LSU

I wouldn’t put that Bama game on Chavis either. Miles shut the offense down with 20 minutes to go, that’s what lost the game.

I don’t put it on Chavis. It did suck that Bama scored in the final drive of each half though...if we are talking about the same game. Bama killed us with a screen pass

I didn’t learn about this until after he was at LSU.

What are you arguing about exactly?

I still think the premise of the statement made by the anonymous coach is flawed. He’s acting like LSU defense used to be great before Aranda, but now we’re just sort of good.

Seems like a dumb statement to me. I expect dominant defense from Aranda more than any other coordinator that we’ve had over the years.

One or two great years under Chavis doesn’t trump Aranda.

How comparisons aren’t always what they seem. Losing at a team that hasn’t been good in almost 60 yrs proves nothing.

Can you explain why O is winning at basically the same rate as our best coach ever but was terrible at OM?

He inherited arguably the best DC in the country. He’s got a ton of talent to work with.

He's winning at basically the same rate as the coach that got fired, not the coach that was beating Nick Saban and legitimately competing for SEC titles.

Everyone knows that there's a line of demarcation between the Mad Hatter and the Les Miles that got fired, and that line was drawn at 1/9/12.

What does it say that the coaches before and after him did significantly better?

I tried explaining that to him but he’s all in on O. Which is fine but I don’t think he’s being very realistic.

What does it matter? Where are they now and where is he now? It all comes back to being irrelevant. The people bringing ole miss up are attempting to throw shade on the coach.

Or maybe they’re keeping what happened there in mind while observing to assess whether he’s creeping into any bad habits.

Tell me this: if O had won anything of note at Ole Miss, would you be losing your mind anytime anyone brought it up?
