I had ancestors that fought for the Union and Confederacy. The first ancestor to arrive before the revolution settled in PA. From there the family spread out to VA at the end of the revolutionary war while others moved to MD, IL IN and OH. I discovered recently that some on my father's side were unionist sympathizers in VA and were provided with payment for livestock, horses and crops taken during the Shennadoah campaigns in 1862 and 1864. The paperwork for the repayment to two family members was found at the National Archives. Also found muster roll information on my 3x greatgrandfathers brother that showed he went to Lynchburg VA to get horses for his cavalry unit but he never reported back.

6 of my great x3 grandfathers fought for the confederacy. 4 in cavalry units and 2 infantry. My mothers side of the family was still in Ireland, England and Finland at the time and immigrated in early 1900’s

Surname gggrandfather served in 1st Mississippi Cavalry under Johnston, Hood and then Forrest. His grandfather (ulster Scot immigrant) served in the American Revolution in South Carolina under Thomas Sumter also known as the fighting gamecock. Proud to have descended from old stock patriot

My surname ancestors who fought in the revolution, war of 1812 and civil war are buried in Noxubee county Mississippi which is where my lineage lived for over 120 years

The others were in a few different MS units, 1 in Louisiana and another in an Alabama unit.

John Quincy Thomas was my GGG Grandfather. He was a member of the 18th Alabama Infantry and fought at Shiloh and Chickamauga where he was wounded and would die in a military hospital almost a year later.

It’s off the beaten path but Appomattox Court House National Historic Park is very nice. Quiet and peaceful.

My grandpa's grandfather was born pre-mature and reportedly was always of small stature. He rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest and was a very good horse thief during the war, and after, according to the stories my grandpa shared with us.

A few of my ancestors from the other side of my family fought for the confederate side as infantry and had really bad luck with dysentery and didn't make it back home.

One of my Great X2 Grandfathers was Pvt Joshua Johns. Served under Stonewall, Gen Ewell, and was Lee’s courier the last year of the war. Was holding Lee’s horse at the surrender.
