You could ask the same about all three of our big sport coaches.
True. But at least Miles and Maneri HAVE won multiple SEC titles and a National Championship apeice. If past history is the best predictor of future success, then you know each of those two CAN win big. Can you say that about Jones?

So you think JJ has done an excellent job at recruiting.
He's done a pretty good job. Not excellent.

That's fine, he still can't coach them.
Correct. He is a bad coach.
I'm not sure you even know what point you're trying to make. My only point is that Hornsby and Patterson objectively do not suck.

Not sure why it's all upvotes, for what is seemingly just your defense of Jones, but straight up... the dude sucks as our coach and we need someone new.

Our expectations were way to high regarding Simmons and rightfully so. We have never gotten the number 1 player in the country before. He just turned out to be a bust. It happens. It happened with Shabazz Muhhomad and Austin Rivers a few years ago. The one good thing Simmons did was brig us Blakeney. I expect him to break out next year and get SEC player of the year and be an All American. Also expect Sampson to grow a lot. We will be alright guys.

Jones loves LSU, this is his dream job, he works his arse off, he hires good assts., and he recruits like a mother.
JJ is my childhood idol.
I hope they fire him for the right reasons.
I.e. .... he can't fricking coach

but isn't this constant game by game evaluation of the coach (LSU wins, he's great, they lose, fire him!) really dumb?
It is dumb but is doesn't negate the fact that a great coach can take mediocre talent and get to the dance.....which IMO is the ultimate goal for any college team. The hype surrounding this team was just too much starting the season.
Im ok with our SEC record (outside of the UT and Arky losses) but the OOC losses are mind blowing and essentially ruined any chance this team had of going dancing.

Mostly agree except the SEC record. There was no excuse to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory with the second half collapse to Alabama at home, after the Tigers won at TuTuscaloosa.

grow up...johnson left LSU with nothing....

Signs highly-rated recruiting classes. Signs Ben Simmons - a self-proclaimed "one and doner" -- to play at LSU -- have to give Jones credit for that. Have to.
He had absolutely nothingtomdomwith convincing BS to come here. If you can't coachem up you must leave the program....

A guy who has about 20 double doubles is a bust? Wow, give me more of those. Jones hasn't done one thing to develop Ben. If one man could win BB games, Pete would have had multiple titles. He never had one.

Robinson, a big 7 footer who looks like a player to me.
Good god man
he can barely tie his own shoe .your ace brought him and Darcy in to man the post....
Good god man

Elbert is a project I'd say...

What makes it so strange to me is that we hired Brendan Suhr to be the X's and O's guy, his credentials are quite good, yet it seems almost like we run the same offense as Brady's teams. How has that coaching philosophy carried over to the current team from two coaches ago?

Basketball threads on here are a joke now. It is impossible to assess a situation at all anymore with no bias. FYI, 4 months ago people thought Tim Quarterman was a 1st round draft pick. Now they want to say he sucks and Jones can't recruit for shite.
He's had 7 top 100 guys in 3 years. Some have left, a couple haven't panned out, but it's still early and guys like Elbert and Sampson should not be written off yet

One only has to ask two questions:
1. Is the goal at LSU to compete for championship?
2. If so, do you think Jones is the guy to accomplish that goal?
If the answer to #2 is no, then what is the rationale for him to remain the head coach?
To give our AD another opportunity to demonstrate his lack of respect for the LSU Fan. In other words, results don't matter, as long as we are getting media hype. Just look at the other failed, bottom of the barrel sports programs at LSU. No coaching changes are being made. If he can't fix the minor sports, how is the world do you expect him to fix the major sports.
Never mind. I see this thread has been anchored. The ones that are on to something always are.

Jones takes over bad program (Johnson was good X's and O's, horrible recruiter.) Jones improves program, recruits like crazy.
Wasn't great but it was easily better than the situation any coach in LSU history took over save Trent and even he was left with a back-loaded senior laden-squad with nothing left when they left and APR issues up the butt.
quote:He's gotten some big names, used an old Dale trick in hiring a coach who can get him the player to get Simmons. Dale used to hire kids high school coach, CJJ hired the kids Godfather.
He's a recruiting machine, using his AAU connections
But pretty much swung and missed on about 4 post players and this years class coming in on paper his worst by any measure.
quote:Very debatable.
Could LSU hire someone to do a better job (recruit, coach)? I doubt it.
quote:For me Elbert it was evaluation on Elbert. Just seems to me he can't move and there's only so much anyone can do to improve that. For me with Jones it's all about accountability. That IMHO is where he has lost this team and program and it's been a cumulative affect for over 4 years.
What I hold against Johnny, frankly, more than this so-called "debacle" of a season (which ain't over yet, by the way), is not not doing more w/ Simmons, but not developing a player like Robinson, a big 7 footer who looks like a player to me.
