“LSU kindly terminates a dumb guy so they can hire a super coach” isn't a 'ratings driver'
Weak minded AD succumbs to Psycho fans and Fires the winningest coach in its history three years after a National Title is a winner.
Careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

False. Other coaches will not shy away from the LSU job. They have seen what it can be. They will all think, "If Les Miles can win there, I know I can." I promise you that Les Miles is not well respected in the college coaching circles. Even the NFL analyst are commenting on how bad he is, and they almost never talk college football.
It's this kind of stupidity that will have us in the same position Tennessee is in two years. If you are going to fire Les you better make damn sure your guy is actually someone respected that can win, recruit and actually wants the job. I don't see too many guys with that sort of resume out there looking for jobs. And before anyone comes out with the Jon Gruden bullshite, the man already has a super bowl ring and a cushy tv job. It will be a cold day in hell before he subjects himself to the type of bullshite this fan base can sling.

Firing a coach for a 9-3 season is absolutely ridiculous. LSU really will be the laughing stock of the national media if they fire Les for only winning 9 games.
I believe you are wrong, because everyone around the country knows that he would not have been fired for his won-loss RECORD, he'd be fired for embarrassing the university wih his poor decisionmaking on the field and for presenting himself as an unstable, ranting buffoon off the field. He is not representing a pro football team where being a jackass might help sell a few tickets, he is representing an academic institution, and many LSU alum around the country and the world , myself included, cringe every time he opens his mouth.
And if you think we would be a laughingstock for firing him with a 9-3 record, well, just watch which schools come after him, and what they will be willing to pay him. His fate will be similar to John Brady's. He will be coaching a team that is not even on the football map nationally. Because no reputable school wants him to be the public face of their athletic program. Simply being a "nice guy" won't cut it any more, not when you come across as a complete arse in the media week after week.

A 9-3 record would give him some grumbles (valid ones IMO)
It's 7/8 that he gets free license. Basically it will come down to if he can win a single SEC game this year against top tier rivals.

It did, Bill Callahan was a complete and miserable failure.

So you think Nebraska enjoyed the Callahan regime?
They were fortunate they had a legend like Osborne to come in and turn it around but they were easily the worst team in their conference for a while there.
But hay let's do that for about five years, see if Nick Saban will come be our AD and find a clone of himself to take the HC job once we have become Moo U.
Great plan!

So, do you think Alabama wishes they could do it all over again? Their latest hire caught a sh#tstorm of heat when he took the Bama job. The media ate up the Nick Saban is a bad guy story. How'd that turn out for the Tide?

quote:I would say heading in the right direction would be competing for an SEC championship which right now we currently are doing. Now with that said if you can with a straight face tell me you believe that Miles is doing a good job of coaching as opposed to hiding behind a shitload of talent that somewhat masks his incredible short comings than I say you are delusional. The teams that Miles has had since the program became relevant again under the previous coaches have been extremely loaded with NFL talent. That talent level has given Miles a very large margin of error to work with. To see his true ability you need to look at his decisions under pressure and you clearly see he is in way over his head.
Define "right direction"? I'd say being 5 and 0 heading into the middle of October is quite an accomplishment. And indicative of a team moving in the right direction. I'd also say that doubling your offensive numbers in the previous game indicates an upward trend (in case you missed it we had 434 yards of total offense as opposed to 230 yards the previous week).

Really? Have your read or watched any of the national media reporting on LSU the win? Les is the laughingstock of college football.
I'll give you links if you are somehow incapable of finding articles, videos, etc.

This wouldn't be close to the Solich firing at all. Solich NEVER had the type of bonehead moments that Miles has had 3 times in his last 8 games. I have no way of knowing how LSU would handle a coaching search, so there's no guarantees on who would be hired. But there's no way in hell we'd catch the media flack than Nebraska did.

Solich was buying players and running a prison work release program, he was also considered a general prick. Miles is known as an extremely nice 'family' guy that runs a clean program and locks up a top five recruiting class every year. You are on drugs if you think they will focus on a couple of boneheaded moments spread over 78 games that included somewhere in the neighborhood of 62+ wins and a National Championship?
They are harping on it now because it's fresh and because LSU fans are in such an uproar.
Remember, controversy drives ratings - right now the 'Les is an idiot' meh-meh is a driving story.
It will not be once the university fires it's all time winning coach for merely winning 8 or 9 games, that will become the story line.
Poor Les, crazy fans, heartless wasteful university spending millions to get rid of said winningest coach while state and school are in the middle of draconian budget cuts.
But yea, your 'righteous' indignation over said winningest coach embarrassing you by 'the way' he wins will be the story.
Man we are a stupid fan base.

Anybody can be fired no matter what their record is. With all the clock management issues, the media would say Miles had it coming. If I fricked up 4 times at a critical aspect of my job like Miles has done I would be fired.
Posted on 10/4/10 at 10:56 am to OldManRiver
If miles wins 9 I don't support firing him but it is probably truth that if it happened, it would be the most media accepted firing of such a coach in history.
I think denying this is futile. You don't have to think he should be fired to acknowledge this.

quote:Nope. You watch. They will turn the tables and make LSU look stupid for firing a coach who won an NC and with his winning percentage. It will be those that aren't saying anything now or it could be those that are. They will turn it around and make LSU look bad either way. I truly beleive that.
Even if we go 9-3, there won't be a reporter or sportscaster in this country who will go to bat for Miles after what's gone down.

Whoever keeps talking about the stupid budget cuts...stfu dude the athletic department and academic department are in no way related. We are not hurting for money...
Posted on 10/4/10 at 11:14 am to otowntiger
You folks are acting like other coaches didn't see what happened yesterday. The media can say what it likes but good coaches know miles is a sideline nightmare.

so what? they laughed at/criticized Bama for hiring Saban. they changed their tune.
on the other end, they praised Nutt's hiring at Ole Miss to highest heaven. Look where they are now.
I don't care what media says. And it would be hard to feel sorry for someone walking away with millions of dollars in the trunk.
