what was up with Will Baker?
It was 5-5 score or so and Will Baker is on the 3 point line saying pass me the pass so I can jack up a 3.

Against a terrible SWAC Alabama State team prior to the under 16 TO.

This is one of those games that baker usually plays well in.

I respectfully disagree. If you’re talking about as far as low quality team you are correct, but they sat in zone almost the entire game and Baker is absolutely clueless how to operate in the post against a zone, CMM had tried moving him around some to the FT line and even to the perimeter and he just doesn’t get it. He got several entry passes with great opportunity to make a skip pass to the opposite elbow 3 and pivoted to the baseline instead of to the middle. Moving forward, I expect teams to run a lot of zone on us and he will become less and less effective. It will be addition by subtraction though because it will allow us to push the ball more. As great as he is at times on offense, we are basically forced to run strictly a half court set with him in, and now that Wright and Williams are coming along, it won’t be necessary. Baker should be a situational player vs a bigger slower defender that is playing man. Otherwise he belongs on the bench.

I didn’t watch the game , I was merely stating that he usually puts up a nice line against swac level talent

Correct. Nicholls dropped into a 2-3 and put Baker in prison. He had a shite ton of turnovers trying to drop step and just got ripped by the help defender over and over.

Deans offensive game is entirely different and imo what we need against a zone. We need a player who can set screens and has a high motor, not someone who is a black hole and eats up space on the floor.

Baker isn’t the player that you’d like a 7’0” player you would want him to be. Rebounding is suspect, doesn’t post well. SEC players are going to non factor him.

Which is why I said what I said, I actually clarified that in my response.

I agree. Our offense is just so abysmal with him in the game. He’s playing like this is the 1970s and just eats up space.

He doesn’t screen, doesn’t move well, and just isn’t as much of a team player as Dean is.

On paper Dean is the worse player, but it’s more so a matter of what the team needs our center to be vs what they’re good at individually. Dean has better synergy and can let our wings do their thing

I didn’t know he had an offensive game . Are setting screens part of a players offensive game?

I agree. Also he has get some ability in the high low set they ran to catch some backside lobs. He can get up a little bit.

yes…….. screening is one of the most fundamental aspects of offensive basketball. The pick and roll has been dominant for a long time now, even ball screens or other types of screens too.

Look at GSW in the NBA. They won four NBA championships off the back of a screen heavy offense, both on and off the ball.

Setting screens is EXTREMELY important for the way we play. Dean sets screens and seals off his man which gives 5 feet of space to our players to shoot. When we get Cook back he’s going to NEED SCREENS. He doesn’t just sit in the post like Baker who doesn’t set screens for anyone.

I’ve seen his highlights at George Washington (and I might be the only one crazy enough to watch them)
Even outside of just screens he is a great roll man and has a crazy vertical. He has been open under the basket multiple times but we fail to hit him either because our players don’t want to give him the ball, don’t see him, or are incapable of throwing the entry pass.

Dean has deceptive guard skills (he played like a guard in high school), he can shoot midranges and threes, but he’s not played that way.

Hell, I’m pretty satisfied with the defense . It’s the long cold spells we go on that have hurt us. Lack of threepoint shooting and pace of play/number of possessions that kill us sometimes. Every game we play it seems we don’t get near as many shots up as the opponent
