I think a lot of people can more easily see themselves in the situation of the mom than they can the agitator. Because most people aren't mentally ill criminals.
And while the mom may have reacted poorly, it was just that, a reaction. Everyone everyday has to react to something. Not everyone goes out attention seeking and agitating, like the mentally ill criminal did.

Agreed. It's hard for most level headed people to empathize with someone who's lost touch with reality and I think that he believes his antics are beloved by more than they are hated. That happens in a "filter bubble" and he apparently has a strong one with many knighting for him on social media.
Now, that being said I don't now him well enough to know if the apology was the real him and the game-day is an alter-ego or if that apology was just something he did so he could save that receipt for later knowing he had video of the entire altercation at the end of the game.

Agree 100%. I wonder if it's possible he felt bad for like a second before his narcissism took back over. Especially once he saw an opportunity to play the victim given the online response.
