Some of the night crew on the Score Board after the game said I should put this on the Rant, so I figure I might as well:

I've worked for a former great football scout( now doing other work) for a number of years now and watch football games with him the past couple of years. I've learned a lot from him and we came up with a number of things watching tonight's game:

- Gonzales needs to become the full offensive coordinator. Crowton isn't the offensive genius people thought he was before coming here. With all the tools that LSU has, Gonzales could do amazing things with it.

- Chavis runs two defenses, and you would think he would learn. His redzone defense is phenomenal, but he fails to implement it into every down. The other 80 yards of the field, he uses a bend but don't break system, which allowed Claiborne to get burnt twice by double moves. When you play your cornerbacks 10+ yards off the LOS, teams are able to kill you short, and then catch you off-guard with the double moves for big games.

- The best way to cause an offense to fall apart? BLITZ the QB. Chavis did a good job of this in the 1st half, yet like everything else, pulled off until late in the 2nd half. And when he did start to do it, he blitzed PETERSON. Plain and simple, you can not send your best defender, and quite possibly the best cornerback in college football. Peterson was ineffective for most of the 2nd half and then Chavis has the audacity to take him out of a number of plays (one of which caused UNC's last TD)

- The run defense was superb, minus a few missed tackles, which were the outcome of players trying to make big hits on big running backs. On most plays, you saw a number of guys right around them right at the line.

- The LSU offense (specifically Crowton) failed majorly to take advantage of the huge holes of the UNC defense. Even though you gameplan for a completely there UNC team, you have to assume (like many of you did) based on accurate assumptions that most of those players were going to be gone. It's the same thing when a team suffers an injury, what do you do? You attack their weakness...

-UNC still had two great d-linemen (Coples and Powell) and their two stud linebackers (Carter and Sturdivant). Their whole secondary was dismantled, yet it was still a 36:21 run to pass ratio. Jefferson made a lot of good passes, yet they went away from the short passes, which was what UNC drove down the field constantly on us.

On Player Notes:

- Hurst has go to go. I don't care if it's Faulk, Evan Washington, or Greg Shaw, someone has to replace him. My buddy even once said, "I feel like I'm watching the Lingerie League with the way Hurst is blocking." Coples dominated him all game long.

- "T-Bob needs to be taken out back and beaten like the redneck name he was given. Another gem from my buddy, but T-Bob cost us 10 points in the matter of two plays. He commits a hold on Ridley's touchdown, where his hold had no effect on what Ridley would have down. Then, he was out in no man's land when Jefferson had his intentional grounding penalty. Jefferson, running for his life, quickly saw an LSU jersey where you would expect your running back or safety valve (if there was one that play) to be, yet it was T-Bob nowhere close to the rest of the linemen.

- Mathieu and Loston need to start in the secondary, Brockers needs to start on the line, and Minter needs to start until Baker returns. These 4 players played light years ahead of the guys who started in front of them (Claiborne, Taylor, Levingston, and Barrow respectively)

- Ford or Ware HAS to get snaps. Someone needs to light a fire under Ridley's arse to make him realize that fumbling the ball twice isn't going to cut it at a major school

- As good as Peterson was, he needs to be taken off return duties or get his return workload cut down. By doing both return duties, he hurt us on the defensive side having to rely on Claiborne and Mathieu most of the 2nd half.

OUT OF ALL THIS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

It's the first week and everyone will be rusty. There wasn't one ranked team that won huge over a TOUGH team. Bama and Oregon beat glorified high school teams. Bama's biggest weakness, trying to find replacements for their big names on defense, disappeared when playing such a horrible team in San Jose State.

Also, straight from him: Texas, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, and Penn State all would have lost to even this UNC team, if they played them tonight. This guy in no way is a LSU homer and trying to shine a better light on this game. While we did rag on a number of guys mentioned above, we still held on to beat a highly motivated UNC team. Be proud of that and still have fun, be happy LSU won, and get drunk tonight And with that, I am out and hope you guys enjoy this

Blitzing your best corner at that point of the game was nothing short of retarded.

really good information and i agree with all of that for sure. was really impressed with mathieu and minter. brockers was clearly more of a force against the run. i think we will see a lot more from these guys. ford and ware should have had some reps. ridley was running effectively, he looked strong and quick, but he killed two drives. both which could have ended the game. i would say coming out of half and scoring on our first drive would have pretty much ended it. good read. thanks.

We got lucky to beat a 2nd team ACC team.
No sugar coating what happened last night.

We underperformed again. It has been going on for several years. It is a pattern. Somebody needs to be accountable.

Good read... LSU is a very young team and with the lack of leadership at QB you can see the script of a comback written when JJ couldn't get anything going in the 2nd half against a beaten team...

I don't think we should bench Mo Claiborne yet. I want to see how he does after watching tape of his mistakes and see if he improves. Anyone we start opposite of PP is gonna get picked on. Mathieu looked pretty good though.

Great post!

You sir are correct LSU played a game that was a no win situation also, because the team they played was just as talented as we were and better than the experts themselves thought. LSU had to play a perfect game yesterday in order to be eccepted by there own fans never mind the media and that is what is stupid. That was the first game they played after making the changes from last year. Sure there where going to be mistakes show me a team that played as many young players as LSU did and did not make any mistakes.

Now the most improvement is made between the first and second games. LSU was not the only big time team to play sloppy at times yesterday and the reason was these teams are playing a lot of young talent and it takes playing time to develope and learn from mistakes. Now they have to learn from those mistakes and not repeat them again because we saw what they do or what happens when thet are made. I fully believe there was something going on between Miles, Crowton and Ford for him not to see the field at all. That needs to be addressed by the media in order to find out why Ford did not play after all these fumbles.

I give a good grade first half and a bad grade second half and all the mistakes can be corrected we will see if they are corrected by next week they will be in Conference and on the road and it counts for real. What I saw yesterday was at times the way it used to be and then see them revert to the last two years that must be corrected.

logic and an objective analysis will be punished on this site.

unless you are calling for miles or crowton's head, go post on another site.

... sounds like you put way too much of the intentional grounding on T-Bob

like you said, first game, no win situation and a desperate unc squad. We weren't the only poor performance yesterday. We'll bounce back.

this needs to be bumped the entire season

great post.

only thing i have to add is that i am a posi-JJ. if anyone was on the Scoreboard last night, you are probably aware of it.
however after watching all these other Qb's on sportscenter, and just thinking about ours, i realize that he isn't someone to lead us to the promise land, unfortunately.

something has got to click with him. i like is athletic ability, he just doesn't have it.

hopefully we can duplicate the first half to the rest of the year.
and we can leave the second half in 2009

I plan on doing one of these for every game that I can catch on television. I won't be able to do some, as I live in Dallas, and they aren't all televised here. I'll likely take these on my own now, as about all but the quotes he gave me are my insights

I do not know how this could become anymore obvious than it already is, what will it take for LSU to make this change? Baffled it hasn't happened yet after last years' fiasco.

The O-line problems definitely still plague the offense, a carry over from last year it seems. The Running Game woes can still be attributed to the RB's individually, but the O-line MUST improve. And as you said, these two players really shouldn't be out there on the field.

quote:

Mathieu and Loston need to start in the secondary, Brockers needs to start on the line, and Minter needs to start until Baker returns. These 4 players played light years ahead of the guys who started in front of them (Claiborne, Taylor, Levingston, and Barrow respectively)

This +100, I can't agree more with this. Brockers was the talk all summer, and early fall camp, so I guess I will chalk up Levingston starting to simply playing the seniority card. As someone else said, I am not yet ready to give up on Claiborne just yet though.

quote:

Ford or Ware HAS to get snaps

Both most likely more talented than the 2 RB's currently ahead of them who see the field. I really hope it is not simply understanding/knowing the playbook that is keeping them from seeing time on the field.

I almost came when Buddy reported BG was taking over the booth, b/c I knew it would be more of this random playcalling with no counters. Crowton doesn't seem to know contstraints.

Great analysis. I do think most of the problems were just a loss of focus in the fourth quarter of a blowout. That doesn't excuse the poor play, but it explains it a bit. Focus is something that can be corrected. This team needs to develop a killer instinct, as it let a team that was thoroughly defeated back into the game. Then it's hard to pick your intensity back up (as noted by Chavis stopping the blitzes).

I absolutely agree about T-Bob. How he continues to get huge minutes absolutely amazes me.

I'm not as concerned about the defensive personnel as most of it is young and we're still trying to find the right packages. I'll be more concerned as the season goes on.

Ridley was a massive disappointment. Outside of T-Bob, he was porbably the worst Tiger on the field. Almost all of his good runs were a factor of, and this is good news, offensive line push. Give Ford or Ware a shot. Now.
