After we lost to UAB I thought, OK, Saban's obviously not the guy to turn us around. Then we go and beat UT and I did a full reversal in thinking about him.

I also seem to remember someone published a story before the game from a Tenn newspaper that talked about how Death Valley wasn't so intimidating anymore, and "may it rest in peace." I hope that author enjoyed the bowl of dicks he ate the night of the game.

That was the beginning of the demise of tenns fabled football program.

Is that Ron Franklin on the call? I really miss that guy. Best college football announcer of my lifetime. Completely unbiased, insightful. Wish he hadn't harrassed that sideline reporter (which if I recall wasnt THAT terrible). Very sad that a guy like him flames out and a guy like Brent Musberger can be so successful.

Yes. Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried. Still THE ABSOLUTE best tandem in my time. No offense to Keith Jackson/Frank Broyles. Ron was the first guy I ever heard to announce where the first down marker was. This was before the days of computer generated field markers. Gottfried actually coached, and was straight up subjective on his analysis. I remember watching running backs and listening to Ron-"has 5, has 10, count it off at 15 yards." If it was Ron Franklin, Mike Gottfried and Adrien Karsten (rip), you knew it was big.

Yep. True pros. They educated a lot of our generation on football. Brent Musberger and Co. are just there to flatter the team that is winning.

Yeah, it may sound cheesy or melodramatic, but when I hear Ron Franklin, I go back in time with a smile. For me, he's like the Dick Clark of my generation (football). I lived in Texas in the early 80's. He was the voice of the Horns. I want Ron Franklin to call my funeral. After I'm eulogized by Sam Elliot.

I guess they didn't get the memo. They went down a few weeks later after beating Bama. I was at both games. That was a fun year.

Poor Chavis! Always get a laugh watching his reactions to the Josh Reed touchdowns in that game. His expressions are pretty classic! Glad he's on our side now.

On an unrelated note, with the new SEC scheduling format, the duration of time between that game and now, is the amount of time we'll have to wait between Tennessee's visits to Tiger Stadium.

That was a great game.
I remember my parents were out of town, so of course that meant party to my brother, so I came over to make sure the house didn't burn down. I'm in the kitchen alone watching the game. When we won I screamed so loud, people on the back porch outside the basement, asked what was that. All my brother said was, "LSU won".
It is amazing where we have come in 12 years.
I'm young so I don't remember the dark ages, but I remember being thrilled and thought we had made big time when we made the Independence Bowl after the 95 season.
Now imagine how upset some of us will be if we end up in the Sugar Bowl this year.

Great game. Only time I recall rushing the field in all the LSU games I've been to.

Hasn't been mentioned that Steve Van Buren, Y. A. Tittle and Jim Taylor were at that game. They were announced and on the field at half time.

Didn't the crowd rush the field the next year?

Anybody remember the article by Gary Lundy in the Knoxville News-Sentinel about how over rated Tiger Stadium was as a difficult place to play. This led to a really intoxicated and raucous stadium for that game. Unfortunately for Mr. Lundy and UT, LSU acted like a cat trapped in a corner. Twelve years later it is Tennessee that has become the largest stadium with an overrated reputation for noise.

quote:

Desperately needing to bounce back, the Tigers would have to do so against the #11 Tennessee Vols. Gary Lundy of the Knoxville News-Sentinel wrote the week of the game that Tiger Stadium's reputation as a difficult place for visiting teams was a myth. 700 Tiger fans sent Lundy angry e-mails. Fortunately, Saban's squad gave the definitive rebuttal.

As a side note Mr. Lundy was colorful writer who unfortunately passed away as a young man.
