A little confused by Gervase's decision to go pro

I am not sure what the statistics are for 12th rounders making the big leagues, but I bet it is pretty small. Minor leaguers dont get paid shite. And if you never end up making the big leagues, I am not sure why foregoing your senior year in college is really worth it, especially when we will be chasing a natty this next year.

Can't know this until you try. May end up great for him, may not. IF he's ready to start the grind toward the bigs, who are you to tell him he shouldn't?

It's also a huge risk that these guys take to not go when drafted. And every year that goes by they lose leverage. I don't blame any of them for starting their pro career.

This.
Whatever it is, he’s happy with it.

but if it were a 5th, 6th, or 7th round, I think I would understand, but 12 seems farther out there.

Because after your senior season, you have ZERO leverage when it comes to a signing bonus - especially if you are selected in the later rounds.

12th Rd for a relief pitcher would not be all that unique to make the bigs.
His signing bonus this year will be at least $125k
His signing bonus next year would be like $25k-$50k.
If he returns another year, he would enter the draft as a 23yr old. That’s just old, and you miss a key year of establishing yourself with your professional team.

He’s betting on himself. I hope nothing for the best for him.

Ask yourself 2 questions: What development is he going to get in college that he wont get in the Mets organization next season while he's also getting paid to play? How much higher is his draft stock likely to get after one more season as a reliever in college? Be honest and remember, he is forgoing a season of income if he comes back to school. He's also going to be a 23 year old rookie.

this right here, used to be even worse, the pro's approach to a senior used to be pretty much, here's the money, take it or leave it, where else are you going to go?"

The problem is you dont understand how the draft works.
This is Gervase's last year with leverage. It wouldnt matter if he balled out and got drafted in say the 6th round next year, his signing bonus even there wouldnt be more than what he's going to get in the 12th round this year with leverage to return to college still. In fact it would probably be peanuts. Kevin Kopps went in the 3rd round last year and got a gift getting half his slotted bonus amount with no leverage. More often you see seniors with no leverage going in like the 6th round and signing for $7500, $1000 or $30k despite slot values there being $250k-$300k.
When you have no leverage to return to college (or go to college as a high schooler), you sign for way under slot. Bottom line, this is why Gervase is taking what he can now. Which will be at least $125k, but probably $200k-$300k since he has leverage as well.
Not a single 23-25 year old (where Gervase would be) last draft signed for ANYWHERE close to the slot value in the Top 10 rounds. Many were $1k-$30k, a fraction of their slot value.
You can see that here
To close up, where you are drafted means absolutely nothing. You have guys who were round 2-3 talent going in the 17th, 18th, 19th rounds yesterday due to signability issues.

He’s still the same player. Let’s say he were to come back and go next year in the 8th round, do you think his chances of making the big leagues would somehow drastically improve?

This is true. And if he were to come back and lose his leverage he’d probably get paid even less.

Good post.
If OP is still confused after your post, it’s a lost cause.

It’s his choice and I respect it. He could also come back and blow out an arm

Sometimes you have to take a chance on yourself in order to live your dream.

If anyone should go as a 12th round pick it is Gervase, he is a wild card. I would be curious as to what they project him doing....at the very least he could be a very effective situational guy. He may be a heck of a closer or mid guy out of the pen. Hell he may develop into a starter. But he needs to go ahead and get in the league and see.
