I was able to go out there today for a few innings to watch for the first time. I said this in another thread, but I appreciate the updates on the site every fall. I know some of y'all can't come, so I'll do my best to pass some things along when I can.

You can't draw a ton from watching two hours of baseball. Take it all with a spoon full of salt. But unless you'd like to talk defensive line rotation for the 13th time this week, this is the best I can do.

I didn't stay until the end. I have some golf balls to bang around at Top Golf this evening, but I did see some interesting stuff.

The most impressive thing to catch my eye was Ty Floyd. I only saw an inning of the slender right hander's work, but he jumped to 93 once and then immediately showed a 74 mph breaking ball without a significant change in arm speed. My favorite impression of the breaking ball was that he threw it for a strike once and threw it snapping out of the zone a couple of other times. He settled in at about 89 on a day in the low 60s. There's some juice in that arm.

Dylan Crews sure looks the part. I've seen video of him, and today showed more of a compact swing with serious bat speed. I know there's swing and miss in there, but when he begins to recognize college pitches he's going to be a force. He looks a little different than the other freshmen.

Saw a lot of freshman RHP Blake Money. He's a big boy on the mound, and he throws hard. Fastball was around 92. Didn't see much in the way of an offspeed offering today in three innings. But there's something to work with.

Also saw a lot of Garrett Edwards. I didn't realize he was Mr. Basketball twice in Class B. Another freshman throwing 91. Didn't see much offspeed stuff that popped to me, either.

Cade Beloso was playing left field today. That's because they like a couple of bats including Tre Morgan. I'm not wild about the idea of Beloso in the outfield, but he did steal a base today. He's a decent athlete for that frame.

Love Brody Drost's swing. It's quick and sound. He ripped a single to right in one of his ABs.

The best BP I watched today by far was Gavin Dugas, and then he hammered a homer into the north wind in his first AB. Need some of these guys who have been around a bit to break out.

Have a great weekend, folks.

How did will Safford look at the plate?

Had a solid single. He's got such a compact frame that everything he does is short and quick. They like him enough to put him in some different defensive spots to see where he might fit if the bat plays consistently.

Again, it's two at bats and a 15 swing BP session. I can't pretend to have anything figured out. But I liked what I saw.

CPM said about Cade that he is moving quicker this fall allowing him to get a look in the outfield.

Thanks Hunt. I think Drost could settle in as the DH next year.

Who’s your dark horse as freshman starter?

I just don’t see it. At all. I’ve often been wrong but I just can not for the life of me see Cade Beloso in the outfield.

I agree. Cade’s not playing OF over DiGiacomo, Crews, Drost, Dugas, Hampton, or Sanford

His bat is more than good enough to stay put at 2B

I think that Cade in LF is not unlike Drew Bianco last year. They are just trying to see if he can play the position if needed to get his bat in the line up.

I think Beloso is out there because they can’t put Morgan out there because he had TJ too recently. If both guys are in the lineup one will DH, or Morgan would be in the OF when his arm is better.

I mean I would think Beloso at 1b is, along with milazzo at C, the most secure position on the diamond right now.

That being said I don’t mind doing weird shite like this in the fall. Lets learn what the guys can do but I would be absolutely floored if we ever saw Beloso anywhere but 1b or DH in a real game.

I did hear that Cade was practicing his windmill dunk on the basketball court this summer. I'm sure it was just a way to get a look at some different infielders. Morgan and Safford have gone from afterthoughts to players for me.

I'm a little disappointed that Money doesn't throw a little harder for such a big guy. Edwards (Mr. Basketball) has never dedicated himself full-time to baseball. It will be interesting to see how he develops.

Ty Floyd, Blake Money, and Garrett Edwards are all going to be really good pitchers.

Crews is definitely different. SEC pitching just tends to chew freshmen hitters up early.

Beloso is a great athlete - played 1B, pitched, and played DE at Curtis. He just plays kind of goofy alot of the time. I don't see him in the OF much, but his bat needs to stay in the lineup even if several guys emerge so you just never know.

Drost is a dude. I could see him getting innings on the mound, too.

I think Dugas will find his way into the lineup every day. His injury derailed his 2019 season, but he can play alot of positions and is a bulldog that the team needs on the field.

I'm so ready for some baseball.

Morgan is a really, really good hitter. He and Deichmann are both Brother Martin products, and I've heard as many good things about Morgan as I did when Deichmann was there.

Beloso dropped about 20 lbs and it shows. Still needs to be at first though.

I just found a tweet with video of Crews’ home run from yesterday. Not a great angle, but still: Twitter

He wasn’t very good out there though. That’s the point. We have options in the outfield and I can’t see CPM sacrificing much defensively out there.

Like I said. I like playing around with it in the fall but I don’t see it continuing into the season.
