Hello Tiger Community.

My family (4 adult sons and our father) will be coming from Boston to LSU for a bucket list trip for the Bama game. We arrive in Baton Rouge at 2pm on Friday and leave from Lafayette at 2pm on Sunday. We are staying in South Baton Rouge, about 7 miles down I-10 and will have a rental car. We have tickets in Section 211.

My question is: How, in as much detail as you'd like to provide, would you spend those 48 hours?

Some specific questions after a bit of research:

1. Where can we get some gear for the game? Our hotel is near Perkins Rowe and Alumni Hall. I'm thinking maybe we get get our rental car, check into our hotel, and then head there to get some shirts. Does that sound good, or would you suggest something else?

2. For dinner on Friday night, I've read that The Chimes may be a good option. Do you agree? Do they take reservations? Anywhere else?

3. Any other suggestions for Friday night? We're more of a brewery or pub group vs. a club. Any point in going to campus? Tailgates are being set up, but none happening, right?

4. For breakfast on Saturday, our hotel provides a free breakfast, so just thinking we'll do that unless there are suggestions otherwise.

5. We do not have a dedicated parking spot. I've heard that we don't need one, but let me know if you feel otherwise. Either way, where should we park and what time should we arrive?

6. Ideally, we'd love to just walk around and meet people. I've read that if I just bring some beers, everyone will open their "home" (tailgate) to us. That sounds great, but I'm not sure how this will work logistically. I'd think we would be out of what we can comfortably carry in short order and we'll be there all day. Are there places on/around campus to buy more? Are there any local favorite beers or would anything like Bud Light work? Maybe if we parked centrally, we could restock at the car. Any and all suggestions here are welcome as this is probably the biggest question mark for us.

7. Assuming we do need to find ourselves lunch, where should that be?

8. What are the "don't miss" things we'll want to see? Any tailgate areas? I'm assuming we should see Mike's Habitat, and the band and team walk down the hill. Agreed? Anything else?

9. What time should we head into the stadium (relative to game time as that is still TBD)?

10. Anything for after the game other than "Good luck getting down I-10"?

11. Any can't miss breakfast spots for Sunday before we leave town?

12. Anything else you'd suggest at all?

We absolutely can't wait for this trip. Thank you all so much for helping us make this memorable.

BUMP

C’mon wafl, let’s hear it

How’d it go

I promise I didn't need the bump to come back.

The short version:

It was literally unbelievable. When reviewing all the various options for our "Let's just pick a fun college football game and go" trip, there was a reason we picked LSU and Tiger Stadium. We knew it was considered one of, if not the, best atmospheres in sports.

But all of the reading and research in the world cannot represent what it truly is like for a game like that. I didn't know stadiums could get that loud.

Add in all the pageantry, and the hospitality of all the fans (including a couple here), and it's a trip we will never forget. I can't believe how lucky we are that of all the possible games, that was the one we picked.

The long version:

My research began months ago with many options: big games like Oregon vs Georgia or Notre Dame at Ohio State or Alabama at Texas, must see home atmospheres like LSU or Wisconsin or Texas A&M or Tennessee or Alabama or Georgia or Penn State or Notre Dame or Ole Miss or Colorado or Washington, or neutral site rivalry games like Florida vs Georgia or Texas vs Oklahoma or Army vs Navy, or the Rose Bowl. I think I had 28 options on my first list.

Based on availability, in July, we narrowed it down to Nov 5 Bama at LSU, Florida at Texas A&M, or Tennessee at Georgia, or the Nov 12 Alabama at Ole Miss. Let's be honest, even for us, LSU was the clear #1 there. Within a month or so, everything was booked.

The season started with tempered expectations, especially after FSU. "With a new coach, we'll see. This could be pretty one-sided, but you never know and I think an LSU vs. Bama game in Tiger Stadium will be fun regardless." And then TN beat Bama and it was clear we'd get a night game, and LSU kept winning and it was clear this would be a huge game. How lucky we were!

Then I came to this board and got a TON of great advice. Then I started checking the weather and checking the weather and checking the weather. See, I was ignorant. I didn't know it never rains in Tiger Stadium on Saturday nights.

We arrived on Friday, checked into our hotel, and went to Bengals and Bandits for some gear. We then popped over to the Chimes for a few beers before heading to Parrain's for dinner. Thank you for that suggestion. We all had alligator for the first time and everything was delicious.

For Saturday, we parked at Parker Coliseum and started walking around the RV lots about 11 as people were getting set up, still in the rain. There were SO MANY RVs. Now, every time I drive by an RV dealership, I'll say, "Must be an LSU game here tonight."

As the rain slowed, we went back to our car to drop our rain gear off. We asked someone to take our picture. That was "our in." Next time someone like me asks you how to tailgate with strangers, tell them, "Just ask them to take your picture." Upon hearing our story, we were in. We tailgated there for a bit and then thanked the group and made our way to the Parade Grounds and Indian Mounds to take in those scenes. My brother described the tailgating "Like Disney World - each themed land has it's own culture and feel." We then checked out PMAC and got a few pictures with Mike.

After that, we joined someone from this board (protecting privacy, but feel free to respond) and tailgated more there. This group was amazingly welcoming and we had a great time, met new friends, enjoyed some beverages and gumbo, and got game-ready. From there, we watched the band and team come down the hill, walked around a little more, and were inside the stadium in our section (211) about an hour before kickoff.

We were already huge Garth Brooks fans, so Callin' Baton Rouge was a highlight for us in the pre-game. Then the first drive was looking a little scary, but we got our first peak at how loud it can get with the interception. From there, the noise just built over the next three hours reaching unbelievable levels.

The fourth quarter and overtime we will never forgot. It took us a while to get down to the field, but we made it. We have an amazing group photo down in the madness that we've been sharing with everyone. I've been reading all your thoughts on where this game ranks in LSU history and it seems most are putting it in top 3-5 at worst. I mean, how lucky can we be that this was the game we picked?

Going in, of course we were going to root for LSU, the home team. But we didn't have any real affinity for the program. But given all the people we met, the welcome we received, and our sheer awe at what you all bring to your fandom, we now have that affinity. We are LSU fans for life.

Geaux Tigers!

These two kind of go hand in hand. There should be a map posted on the lsu sports website that will show where contra-flow will be set up and then you should be able to pick a parking lot that works for your route back to the hotel. It will still require patience.

ETA: But if you're staying near Perkins Rowe, you may not need to get on the interstate at all to get to and from campus.

Ok...since my little joke about being on "The First 48" went over about as well as a David Duke appearance at the Bayou Classic, here are some real answers.

quote:

2. For dinner on Friday night, I've read that The Chimes may be a good option. Do you agree? Do they take reservations? Anywhere else?

Good idea. I don't think they take reservations in advance, so be prepared to wait a bit.

quote:

7. Assuming we do need to find ourselves lunch, where should that be?

If you walk around enough and talk to people on campus tailgating, you will get fed plenty. There really IS such a thing as a free lunch!

quote:

9. What time should we head into the stadium (relative to game time as that is still TBD)?

You should be in the stadium to see the band pregame on the field. They take the field around 20 minutes prior to kickoff. If you wait til last minute to get into stadium, you will run into delays trying to get in with the ticket takers being overwhelmed.

Hope this helps and you get to see the good guys win

I'll throw in my .02.

For gear, I'd just order online rather than waiting. Two weeks away, so you'll get everything in time. I don't live in BR so I'll let anyone else give recs for time killing.

For game day, look into taking the bus from downtown. $10 a person, it leaves 3 hours prior to kickoff. It leaves right after the game and brings you back downtown. I find 3 hours is a good bit of time if you don't have a tailgate to go to. Enough time to walk around and take it in without getting bored.

If everyone is outgoing, I'm sure there may be a larger tailgate that will take you in. I, personally just feel weird trying to do that, but that's just me. Others are way more comfortable doing that.

Others may disagree, but I would suggest wearing the gear of your team. People tend to appreciate the bucket list thing and you will be well received.

I'm from out of town too and attend one game a year with family. I'm usually gifted a parking pass by a family member. If not then I buy one in Lot 409. Lot 409 has the tiger buses that run you to the stadium and back after the game. Pretty easy to access and traffic is probably the best after games. It gets you to Burbank quickly.

If you want to go to a tailgate that has some of the best food you will find with a very accomodating host, go to the area by the Indian Mounds and look for DVA Tailgating. Tell Zach that I sent ya.

Others can (and I'm sure will) fill you in with more detail. Here's what I can offer:

1- If you are looking for LSU gear, you can get it pretty much anywhere. Academy, Dicks sporting, etc. If you do visit campus, there is an LSU gift shop not far from Mike's habitat. (Note - if you are looking to mingle with LSU tailgaters, you'd probably get more interaction wearing another school's gear - maybe your local team).

2 - Others can help you more with where to eat. I'm a Mike Anderson's or even Walk On's type of guy but I know there are many on here with more refined dining taste.

3 - Again, there are others with better info than me on this. If this was 30 years ago, I'd tell you to go to Peking Gardens on Corporate off of college and get a flaming zombie, but alas I don't think that's there anymore. I know there are places with trivia contests, etc.

4 - Nothing wrong with a good hotel breakfast as long as it's not continental.

5 - Gonna pass on this one. It's been too long since I've gone and even longer since I've gone without a pass.

6 - I'm not one to mingle with other people's tailgating, but from what I gather, introduce yourself. If you are wearing an opposing team's gear people will yell "Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait" at you and that is your opening to start a conversation with them and maybe get invited to some food. About carrying beer - maybe buy a cheap child's wagon to pull the beer around in. Of bring a couple of small bottles of whiskey instead, If you have room in the wagon, bring a game like Kan Jam and set it up and invite people to play. Or just bring a football to toss around.

7. There are lots of vendors on campus in trailers, booths, etc. to find food if you don't get invited to a tailgate.

8. Yeah, check out Mike's habitat. People watch. Get some food and have a picnic under an oak tree. Watch the band come down the hill.

9. A lot of people start going in after the band passes, but I've seen where they pass a lot earlier now. I'd go in an hour or maybe a little more before kickoff.

10. Relax and unwind. Find a tailgate with a TV to watch games and highlights. Let the traffic disperse.

11. I'll let others address this one. When I'm travelling home, I like to eat something quick (maybe in the hotel) and get going. I always tell my family - if the wheels aren't turning, we're not getting closer to where we are going.

12. Enjoy.

If you are staying near Perkins Rowe, that Alumni Hall has a pretty big selection for gear, as much as the LSU gift shop on campus
Chimes is no reservations but Perkins Rowe has some places to dine if you don't want to come to campus
Parking without a spot means you likely need to get there earlier, that shuttle is available from downtown or you can catch it at the Lauberge Casino as well which is closer to Perkins Rowe area
You will be fine walking around campus, tailgates are welcoming and you will have plenty of food and drink
If you need food or beer there is a Matherne's grocery right on campus across from stadium and some places to eat if you want a quick lunch such as Chimes, Torchy's or even Walk On's or Plucker's is walkable
Definitely be there for the Tiger Walk and band coming down hill by stadium, check out the live mascot
The PMAC is also open for free to go in and hang out, games are on big screen (Tenn vs UGA) and band comes in and plays as well
Get in stadium maybe 30/45 minutes before game for pregame
Plenty of places have brunch on Sunday's - Another Broken Egg is close to your hotel, Olive or Twist has a brunch Iverstine's has a breakfast as well which is not far either

Isn't it around 30 minutes prior that they play Callin Baton Rouge and Louisiana Saturday Night? I really like that as well.

If you're arriving at 2 you could probably fit in visiting the LSU Sports Shop on side of Mikes Habitat and/or the Barnes and Noble on campus. That has a huge selection of LSU sports and just your generic LSU gear.

Boston to the Bayou! Excellent.
I live on Cape Cod, used to live in Metry, and been to dozens of LSU games and 8 different SEC stadiums . Can’t help with traffic or meals, but when it comes to tailgate strategies our group of five have found that getting your most outgoing/friendly member of the group to approach a tailgate that is obviously large enough to absorb a group of 6. Don’t bum rush it with all 6 of you, etiquette and respect is essential. We often ask a person to direct us to the host and simply tell him/her about your Bucket List trip and I think you will be welcomed! LSU fans are the best! Geaux Tigers!

Alumni Hall is fine. They have plenty of LSU gear.

quote:

The Chimes is probably "the" place to eat on-campus. The problem is it will get packed in a hurry. I'm not sure if they take reservations (at least on game weekends), but you could try. Perhaps your best bet would be to get their early (probably a little before 5:00) and hang in the bar area until you are ready to eat. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of Chimes, George's is not too far from where you are staying. It's a local burger, po-boy, sandwich, fried seafood spot. It won't be as rowdy as campus, but a place where locals will eat. Not too far from there is Superior Grill (Mexican food). The food is solid (but overpriced). Really, people go more for the atmosphere/margaritas. It will be slammed starting at just after 5:00.

quote:

5. We do not have a dedicated parking spot. I've heard that we don't need one, but let me know if you feel otherwise. Either way, where should we park and what time should we arrive?

It is LSU v Alabama. Campus will be packed. Assuming the kickoff is at 6:00 pm or 7:00, you will probably want to arrive at least 3 hours early. Really, since you are visiting, get to campus late-morning/early afternoon. Hit the big tailgates and tell them you are from out of town and you want to check out the tailgating. That's all you need to say. The people at the tailgate will be proud and very happy to serve you all the food and drinks you want.

Parking shouldn't be an issue if you get their early. From your hotel I would travel southeast down Bluebonnet Blvd. until it eventually ends on Hwy. 30 (Nicholson Dr.) Take a right at the light. Go to the next traffic light (Gardere Ln) and take a LEFT towards the L'Auburge casino. When you get to the casino, take a right through the three roundabouts. That will put you on the River Road driving into campus. Stay on River Road (about 10 minutes) until you cross Gourrier Dr. To your right will be the "Hayfield lots". It is a big grass parking lot (with limestone roads). It is free parking. The downside is the route is a bit longer than other routes and it is a little walk from the stadium/heart of campus. The upside is you can take the exact route back out to your hotel and traffic isn't too bad when doing so. You never have to get on I-10. The closer within the center of campus you park, the worse the traffic in and out.

quote:

I've read that if I just bring some beers, everyone will open their "home" (tailgate) to us. That sounds great, but I'm not sure how this will work logistically. I'd think we would be out of what we can comfortably carry in short order and we'll be there all day. Are there places on/around campus to buy more? Any and all suggestions here are welcome as this is probably the biggest question mark for us.

There is no need to bring anything. Tell the people at the tailgates you are from Boston and you want to experience LSU tailgating. They will happily give you any and every drink you want. Beer, bourbon, vodka, tequila, etc. You name it, they have it. No one will be offended that you didn't bring anything to share. They WANT you to party with them.

quote:

Assuming we do need to find ourselves lunch, where should that be?

Any tailgate you want. You will have ZERO trouble finding food. In fact, you will be sick of eating at some point.

quote:

What time should we head into the stadium (relative to game time as that is still TBD)?

It is a bit of a pain to get through the security checkpoints to enter the stadium. I would get in line at security no later than 40 minutes before kickoff. Budget about 10-15 minutes to get through the bag check. The pregame "festivities" on the field will start about 20 minutes before kickoff. When you walk into the stadium go to one of the tunnels on ground/field level and take a look around. It allows to you get a sense of the atmosphere from ground level.

Because it is Alabama v LSU, the crowd will be at a fever pitch. Because it is (likely) a night game that fever pitch will be even greater. Make sure you are in your seats about 15 minutes before the kick to get the full experience. The band will march onto the field and play the first four notes of (pregame)/Hold that Tiger...the stadium will explode!

quote:

Anything for after the game other than "Good luck getting down I-10"?

Walk-On's restaurant will likely have huge party after the game (and before it too). It's not far from the stadium

Like others have said, wear your local CFB colors and you'll stand out more and strike up many more conversations. If you are insistent on wearing LSU gear though it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it on campus if for no other reason, just to get familiar with campus before the crowds move in.

Get out there as early as you can. I don't attend many games, but I always enjoy setting up 7-8 and watching people roll in. If you don't have a designated tailgate though that may be tougher and could have some down time. I also just usually park behind the baseball stadium. It is a bit of a walk but a lot of tailgates on the way and can use the bathrooms at Alex Box.

Wear your colors and be friendly. It is as simple as that. Whoever invites you to join them will make sure you are well fed and have plenty to drink.

One thing you could do is get a couple of backpack ice chests to carry around. Something that would be easy is get a couple of cheap ones for y'all to wear and then just throw them away if it is close to game time and you can't make it back to the car. You can always walk back to the car through out the day if you start getting low.

*If you go the cheap/disposable route, use frozen water bottles, not ice, to keep everything cool. You can drink the water as it thaws and you won't have a cheap ice chest leaking freezing water down your back.*

Do that and get in the stadium for Callin' Baton Rouge and the band coming on the field. Times will be posted on here the week of the game.
