November 6, 1982: LSU 20 Alabama 10....and it really wasn't that close. Alabama had won all meetings with LSU from 1971 to 1979-- with only a handful competitive. After the game Coach Bryant hinted it might be time to step down.

I know some of you wonder why us older guys celebrate that 1982 so much. That's understandable as they were 8-3-1 with an Orange Bowl loss and loss to Tulane at Tiger Stadium.

You kinda had to be there. LSU had been mediocre at best since 1973 and then crashed in 1981 with 3-7-1. Then in 82 there were top 10 (at kickoff)wins vs Florida, Alabama and Florida State.

I was at that 1982 Bama game. Here is a short clip of the 1982 Tigers. The Bama game starts at the 3:25 mark:

That Alabama team had one loss..to Tennessee.

This is a stretch, but LSU's previous win was at home vs Ole Miss....where LSU scored 45.

You can stop the wishbone if you play perfect assignment football on defense. We did that game.

True. I went to the airport to welcome the team home that night. Good times.

Remember watching that 1982 game as a 14 year old. Started watching LSU in 1974. That 8 year stretch cemented my hatred of Bama for the rest of my life.

I was in Tiger Band at the time. Great game.
Impromptu Pep Rally outside the stadium.
Alabama had 32 yards and ZERO first downs at halftime.

I was 10 years old. That Tulane loss gutted me after being at the FSU orange-o-Rama.

I actually referenced that game and called it 6 days ago!

LINK

November 6, 1982. In Birmingham, I was there.

LSU was undefeated (7-0-1) and ranked 11th with All-Americans Albert Richardson and James Britt on defense and on offense the "Dalton James Gang" backfield -- freshmen tailbacks Dalton Hilliard and Gary James -- along with quarterback Alan Risher and receiver Eric Martin.

The Alabana Crimson Tide came in 7-1 and ranked eighth on an 11-game winning streak against the Tigers, dating back to 1971. The Tide featured All Americans on defense like Mike Pitts, Jeremiah Castile and Louisiana native Tommy Wilcox.

At the end of the day, The streak was broken. LSU won 20-10, holding Alabana to all of 119 yards and forcing seven fumbles and recovering four. Risher was player of the game with 218 yards of total offense, completing 20-26 passes.

After that, Bana was no more. They fell to No. 17 and lost to Southern Miss. the next week, and fell out of the rankings. The next week they lost to Auburn.

LSU broke Bana and the Bear quit. Retired after that season.

Anyone who says LSU can’t compete with Bana was not there that day at Legion Field when at half LSU was ahead 17-0 and Alabana had gained all of 32 yards on offense and not gained a single first down. It was a slaughter.

It’s time to retire Saban. Break the elf. Send the Tahd reeling like we did in 1982.

Another Icon gone….

Best part is it doesn’t matter if Saban does retire Kelly’s gonna win more than he loses against Sabana

Kind of a random post. Cholly Mac was not the coach of the 1982 team, that honor fell to Jerry Stovall.

I played tuba for the band at that game. Our lips were bleeding from playing so hard and none of us could barely talk after the game due to the constant yelling and screaming for our awesome Tigers! Hard to believe it’s been 40 years.

The situation in college FB now is very similar to 1981 or 82.

Bama seems to be coming down from a dynastic run. Ditto Clemson.

Georgia is a national championship contender.

Auburn and Florida are down.

What shook this up? Coaching change at Bama. Pat Dye and Charley Pell/Galen Hall started pulling decent recruiting. Bobby Bowden was building a powerhouse at FSU with top recruiting. We need decent programs around Bama and Georgia to pull recruits away from them.

We’re about the same age. I listened to the Tulane game on radio sitting at my parents kitchen table. I was pissed AF. Still, that 82 team is still one of my favorites, it really cemented my fandom as a youth. That Orange Bowl loss to Nebraska still pisses me off as well.
