I don't think it's ever played at a particularly important part of the game. Is it only on third down? I don't get to go to many games anymore so my memory might be hazy, but it doesn't ever seem like it keeps the crowd from getting loud when needed.

They play it on a lot of third downs. The students tend to participate in the cheer, or whatever you want to call it, rather than yell.
