3rd Down Confusion Aside, how bad was the 2nd down call?

Besides the obvious of sticking with the horse that carried you down the field...
Wouldn't it behoove you to give the ball to Stephen Ridley on a play like that, instead of giving the ball to Jefferson who has not shown the propensity for making the right reads?
If you were dead set on running the ball with Jefferson, wouldn't it behoove you to roll him out towards a sideline on a bootleg with the option to pass where he could a) throw the ball in the endzone resulting in a score or incomplete pass b) run the ball into the endzone c) run out of bounds if the play was stretched too wide stopping the clock?
Even if you have no intention of passing the ball, isn't the idea to give Tennessee D a moment's pause to think that he might throw the ball which might give him enough time to get into the endzone?
And finally, even if you're dead set on Jefferson running without the option to pass, say you don't even want to risk him throwing an interception, do you not tell him under almost any circumstances to break the ball outside?
Is it just me or is that mistake just as egregious as the resulting confusion on 3rd down?

IT WAS AWEFUL!!!! who in the stadium didn't know what was coming when Jefferson came back in? Has this staff EVER shown the ability to be creative enough to send out a decoy??? NO!
It was essentially the INVERTED VICTORY FORMATION for Tennesse, and they screwed it up!

Nobody sitting around me. We all saw it coming.

I think Miles wanted his pet to be the hero at the end of the game. The play call was horrible. It wasn't even an option. It was a QB run all the way.

I agree. Though, it would have been okay with a 2nd play already called that was a pass into (or out of) the end zone immediately following.
If JJ is stopped they line up immediately and do the roll out you describe with the order to THROW it...either TD or out of reach. THEN, they could send in new personnel (if an incompletion)
I would have preferred to leave Lee in and he could drop back to pass, if lane opens, he runs a QB draw. If not, see above.

It wasn't even CLOSE to being as big of an issue as the 3rd down fiasco. And they did get a yard closer and that definitely helped on the untimed play...because we barely got in. We would have been short if we needed two yards on that final play. Ridley did an awesome job because there was actually a guy who had a shot at him behind the line of scrimmage, but Ridley cut it inside.
Also, I wouldn't have even put a passing option on the table at that point. The way we've been underthrowing balls in the end zone - hell no. I probably would have went with Ridley on two different looks, but I understand why they may have went with JJ first. And he did run well against Tennessee.

I think the 1st down call should have been Ridley, 2nd down spike, 3rd down Ridley once again. Your point is well taken about Ridley and also about JJ needing to run for the pylon. Ridley actually made a pretty good block on JJ's carry as I recall.

Not only was it a very predictable play call (I mean how much more obvious can we get, Lee comes out, Jefferson comes in near the goal line, gee I wonder who's going to run with it) But we call the play from SHOTGUN formation, giving Jefferson a few extra yards to get?? Does Crowton not think of these things when he's calling plays?

Since there were 30 seconds left, I had no problem with a running play on 2nd down. It was not having a second play called for third down ready to go. The team easily could have gotten back up and run a third down play with plenty of time to spare.

I thought the same thing. Could believe they didn't give our best offensive player the ball.
Then again our coaches are clueless.
All the excuses in the world can be thrown out there. But, the answer is the same as it's been all year. Our offense in general is a clusterfuk.

I'm okay with a running play being called.
But Jefferson. On a keeper. With no options. Not to the outside? Isn't that crazy?
Hell, even a delayed Jordan Jefferson draw would've been better. That Tennessee middle was exhausted.

Josh doesn't miss his block JJ scores.
T-Bob and JJ get on the same page, we get two ties to win and not one.
If JJ doesn't get that get that yard on 2nd down, does SR score on the final play?
