On January 29th 2000 LSU blew out Arizona 86-60 highlighted by Jabari Smiths funk dunk. Whether you were sitting in the nose bleed section (like me) or behind the bench it did'nt matter. The Deaf Dome was electric.

Was in the building for both the Grambling one and the Arizona one.

To this day, that is my favorite LSU basketball team. Dad had season tickets and as a kid growing up in the 90's, that was the first time I got to see LSU be good at basketball.

Shaq had his jersey retired at half time too, right?

"LSU now stands for Love Shaq University!"

If it was a different game I was at both. That dunk is top 10 LSU moment for me.

Good times.

Saw Jabari in an LSU hoodie at an Atlanta Kroger a couple years ago. Wasn't quite close enough to go speak and didn't wanna seem like a groupie by running up to him. But kinda hard to miss a 6'10" guy wearing LSU gear.

This is what LSU can be with the right coach at the helm. Brady did well, but was too inconsistent, we had it with Dale for the most part up until the end, and we SURE AS HELL had it with Wade, but refused to back him against the BS media and TOOTHLESS NCAA.

There's no reason with the resources and brand we have as a university that we shouldn't be a constant tournament participant, and the clearly the class of the league behind Kentucky.

Not even gonna pretend I knew this without looking it up. Shaq's jersey was retired on 12/16/2000 at the UNO game.

BATON ROUGE — Tonight may be one of those special nights Saturday at the Maravich Assembly Center, as the Tigers and the University of New Orleans renew its basketball series for the first time since 1986 and both come in off strong starts with LSU 5-0 and UNO 5-2. Also on the program will be the retirement of the jersey No. 33 worn by Shaquille O’Neal in his three All-American years in Tiger Town.

The ceremonies get underway at approximately 6:50 p.m. at the Assembly Center. The game will follow the ceremonies.

I was there sitting behind baseline where the student section is now on about row 8 from the floor.

The talent in that game for both teams was incredible.

LSU had:

Stromile Swift - 9 NBA seasons
Jabari Smith - 4 NBA seasons
Ronald Dupree - 6 NBA seasons
plus
Torris Bright
Brian Beshara
Collis Temple III
side-note: Brandon Landry and Jack Warner (Walk-Ons founders)

That Arizona team had future NBA players:

Gilbert Arenas (freshman year) 11 NBA seasons
Luke Walton (also freshman year) 10 NBA seasons
Richard Jefferson (sophomore but he was injured and did not play) 17 NBA seasons
Loren Woods - 6 NBA seasons

BATON ROUGE — With a relentless, 40-minute effort, LSU marveled a crowd of nearly 14,000 with a dunk-filled, rush-the-court, 86-60, victory over the fifth-ranked Arizona Wildcats here Saturday afternoon.

quote:

The play that really iced the LSU victory was the final play of the first half. Roland stole the ball away from Gardner and found Smith on the break away. Smith converted a fake pass behind the back and power slam giving LSU momentum going into the locker room with a 38-21 lead.
