247: JT Daniels possible destinations

quote:

Myles Brennan is expected to be Joe Burrow’s successor in Baton Rouge. But the Tigers were at least kicking the tires on potential QB transfer options earlier this offseason. That could occur again as Daniels to LSU makes a lot of sense. Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron recruited Daniels in high school, and the two have a strong relationship. Daniels’ skillset fits what the Tigers like to do offensively, too. At worst, Daniels would push Brennan in fall camp and provide a highly-reliable backup. At best, Daniels could come in, take the job and pick up right where Burrow left off. LSU's quarterback situation is already one of the most intriguing nationally. This would spice that up by more than a few notches.

Other teams included are: Tennessee, Michigan, Florida State, Washington, Ole Miss and return to USC.

The writer is really only saying we would make sense. There's nothing indicating anyone has made contact or conversations have been had. It's as speculative as someones opinion in here.

Orgeron recruited him and they apparently still have a good relationship.

Exactly. Either the OP has no reading comprehension ability or he is intentionally trying to be misleading.

That aside, I just don't see him coming to LSU. Certainly LSU is an attractive spot. Particularly after just watching what the last transfer did. But I don't know if the current circumstances lead to here being the best "fit" for what he is probably looking for.

1. It's already late in the process. But with the current restrictions in place it makes it even "later". Yes, Burrow came in even later than this. But he could meet with the coaches/team; workout with his teammates, etc. LSU has already made the decision that class will be on-line only this summer. So if regular students can't be on campus, it seems doubtful the school would make an exception for athletes. That means he likely wouldn't be able to even meet his teammates in person until August.

2. The general consensus is that the NCAA is likely to allow immediate eligibility for transfers. Presumably he is leaving USC because he doesn't want to be the backup (just like Burrow). So wherever he decides to go it will almost assuredly be a school where the coach has given him a (wink-wink) promise that he will be the starter. I've never gotten the sense the coaching staff has ever been 100% sold on Brennan. But despite those uncertainties he seems to be the safer choice for THIS season given the current and likely circumstances. He knows and has worked with the current players/OC. He was in the room all of last season. He's not going to be Burrow, but at least the staff/players have some idea what he brings to the table in LSU's offense, even if Daniels may be the more gifted QB.

Tennessee seems like the most realistic destination. Tee Martin was his OC at USC. While there is still some degree of an unknown factor with Brennan at LSU (he could turn out to be great), there is a known factor at Tenn...and it ain't good. Their QB's are awful. Pruitt is in year 3 and it looked like he wasn't going to even make it that far at the middle of last season. I suspect he would be MORE than willing to roll the dice Daniels, even if he can't get him on campus until just before the season starts. If nothing else, that decision alone would probably buy him two more years at UT. Ed wants to win big at LSU, but he's not desperate after this past season. Pruitt is.

USC fans seem to have liked him too. They're all saying he had plenty of talent but really was just unlucky with an injury right after he'd won the job. Then he got Bledsoe'd by his backup, Slovis.

I don’t even love Brennan that much, but it’s going to be hard to beat him out with the way this offseason is going to go in terms of preparation & acclimation.

There are more direct paths to playing right away than LSU

So what was the point of your comment? Virtue signaling?

Wow. Can you imagine if he came in and Myles still didn't get the job?

I would love to have him on the roster. I don't like trusting a true freshmen with the back up role. Plus, if Miles blows up this year, he could leave and then we would have a true sophmore starting which I also don't like.

Tennessee makes sense, but so does Florida State. Their QB's are terrible (as is their offensive line), but Mike Norvell coming over from Memphis would be a good coach to play for if I'm a QB. And Florida State can still recruit as a program. They just need coaching.

There is a clear difference between the expectations of a “4th-year graduate transfer” and a “underclassman with 3 years of eligibility left”. Not to mention, he is coming off an injury, and still may not be 100% by August.

He may well be willing to come to a stud program like LSU, without being handed a starting role right off the bat.
