Another Devastating Loss: Kisatchie National Forest Announces Wildfire Line Of Duty Death After Young Firefighter Struck By Tree.

quote:

Incredibly sad news coming out of the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana today:

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news that on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, wildland firefighter Kaitlyn “KK” Gallagher, 24, of Alexandria, Louisiana, died in the line of duty when she was struck by a tree while responding to the Broken Creek Fire, a 10-acre wildfire now contained, which was in Rapides Parish on the Kisatchie National Forest.

“As we experience this terrible tragedy, our prayers are with KK’s family, friends, and all who knew her,” said Lisa Lewis, Forest Supervisor. “The loss of KK is deeply felt throughout the Forest Service, the entire wildland fire community, and our local community.

We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who was touched by her life.”

KK joined the U.S. Forest Service as a Wildland Firefighter Apprentice in 2025. She spent two summers on the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming, serving on both engine and wildland fire modules. While working for the Kisatchie National Forest, KK assisted with prescribed burns and responding to wildfires. Her joy for life, heart for service, and love of outdoors made her a valued member of the U.S. Forest Service. Her family stated that KK’s passion was sharing her faith in Jesus, a passion she lived out while helping shape young lives as a Youth Leader at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church and Girls Basketball and Softball coach at Holy Savior Menard High School, both in Alexandria.

I don't know if this link is pay-walled.
The Hotshot Wakeup

My condolences and prayers to anyone here who may know her or is family. It has been a rough year for wildland firefighting deaths around the country

It's been brutally dry all summer and the high winds coming in with this front will make it especially dangerous this weekend. We don't typically get the massive firestorms here like they do out west but it doesn't take a big fire to kill you. RIP.

Yep, Elevated fire weather for today and tomorrow. It isn't as dry as 2023, but it is dry enough to cause problems with some bad luck thrown in. Extreme and Exceptional Drought is starting to creep in for the northern part of the state.

She was an awesome kid. Exactly what you would want your daughter to be like. Good student, hard worker, modest and stayed out of trouble, a true servant of Jesus. Lit up every room. She will be missed.RIP KK

Absolutely terrible...rip seems like an outstanding person

Genuinely curious, and not saying it's at all relevant to this, but if something like this happened and then someone was found to be responsible for causing the fire, are they also criminally responsible for first responders deaths?

I don’t know the legal answer for this. I believe they should be held responsible.

She could’ve done anything in life and chose to go fight wildfires.

I believe they can be charged, especially if it is criminal arson rather than negligence/accidental.

Arson is incredibly difficult to prosecute, though. The person almost has to be caught red handed in the act of starting the fire.

In this part of the world woods arson used to be relatively common, less so now. People would have a grudge against the big timber companies for one reason or another, usually for posting land they were accustomed to hunting on. The Hank Williams song "Setting The Woods On Fire" was not just a figure of speech.

I feel bad for her parents. I don’t think I would want my daughter doing a job like that. I’d be worried non stop. That might make me sexist. RIP to this nice young lady.
