We are lacking expirienced depth in the secondary.

Thats exactly what I mentioned in my first post here. Starters we have in the secondary are probably the most talented the country bar none. Yeah, if there is a major injury, it could potentially be an issue. But on opening night, when we line up against UNT, I think we will be lining up the best defense in the country.

LSU Grand Dad: you raise some legitimate points ... but forget about all that, fill that cup to the top, and start gulping the Kool-Aid. An even better overall DL, fast LB's, and a ball hawking secondary will make this defense as good as last year's.

I graduated from LSU in 92, I can't tell you how happy it makes me that our big "concern" is expirienced depth

Our inexperience at LB will be better than our experience at LB last year

I think the D line has a chance to be just as good if not better. Brockers will be missed but Johnson should fill in just nicely.

The LBs can be nothing BUT better. Minter is primed for a stand out season.

The secondary should take some time to gel together. We might see some pass plays given up early in the season, maybe some blown coverage. I have a feeling it will come together well though.

Amen to that! We would gladly pin all our hopes on one incoming freshman RB (or whatever) as a potential savior, which meant getting us to something like the Car Quest Crankshaft Bowl. At least for those the age of H-Town and myself, the good ole days weren't all that good!

I was just a young'n through the 90's, but me and my dad were at every game from like 95 or 96 until 2004. Great memories of Spurrier's Gators coming in and beating us 56-0.

It is an amazing thing that we get all pissed off at each other and debate which of our 5 RBs will see the lion's share of playing time or how deep our loaded secondary is, or how many fresh bodies we can roll up on the defensive line that will be playing on Sundays in the future.

Here's to hoping that this season will be "the best LSU (or NCAA) football team of all time".

How far has LSU come when the "weak link" is a RS Junior that was the #1 safety recruit in the nation?

He's the weak link because he hasn't lived up to that ranking, not even close

The most chicken shite LSU fan comment of all time. Guarenttes you a good outcome, if you are wrong you get to say you are happy and if not you get to say I told you so.

Welcome to the world of a pessimist. The old saying is that there are only two possible outcomes when you are a pessimist...you are either proven right or you are pleasantly surprised...so perhaps we should all be pessimists!

My first year was 87, we went 10-1-1 and finished #5, from there it was a train wreck for over a decade

Getting Kevin Faulk and going to the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl at 6-4-1 was casue for wild celebration in the mid 90's, now it would be cause for firing the coach. Yeah, times have changed for the better

It was 58-3 FWIW

Yes, we owe them (among others) a few more beatdowns while they are down.

I think people scare themselves when they become too "LSU" centered and lose perspective. Yes perhaps our secondary will not be as "good as last year", but you are comparing them to one of the all time best secondaries ever put together.

What you should be comparing our DB situation to is how they stack up against the other teams in the country. Tell me for instance which DB group in the SEC you would trade our group for? I'll answer that for you...nobody's! That even includes Bama and Fla, who year in and year out have talent levels on par with ours.

If YOU are worried, imagine what the fans of other teams are feeling. You want USCe's secondary, or TAMU's, or Auburns? Other teams are looking at us and going, "man, I would love to start with Simon, Mathieu, and Reid and have my only concern to be whether my former number 1 safety recruit in the country is going to live up to his billing or just be ordinary!"

A little perspective will go a long way to alleviating your worries.

Secondary won't be as good as last year. But LB will be improved so it should balance out. The d-line will kill people.

we don't know how good simon will be yet...if he lives up to billing...then the db's will be as good or better as last.....simon could be a stud....we know what we got in mathieu and reid.....

Lb's were not that good last year...honestly think we will see an improvement there this year...and our DL will be significantly improved. Overall, I see this defense as being every bit as good, and better up front.

Breakout season for Anthony Johnson. Mark it down. Our pass rush and run defense will be so stout that our secondary will be just fine.

Truth! I was living in Dallas at the time and 20-something Tiger fans would be embarrassed for me if they saw how jacked up I was to get to S'port for the Weedwacker Bowl against Michigan State.

By the way, looking back on it, that '95 team had a lot of talent and probably done better than the 7-4-1 record they achieved.

i'm thinking they very well could give up that many against certain teams;

wow grandDad.....you are severely underselling the talent on this Defense. They have as many as 6-7 future first round NFL players starting on that defense...this team will be even better than last year. You guys thought the same when we lost our top dog from each level last year....nevis, shep, pp7. Look at how much better we were in 2011 compared to 2010 with them. LSU is loaded with talent, and has a great defensive coaching staff.

I like that our schedule allows us to get some experience before the SEC wars but my opinion is that we are going to have to score a lot to overcome our weaknesses.

good point....will we score with sustained offense or will we have to rely on take aways, pick six's and punt returns to gain separation?

10-2 would not surprise me. I

me either....it is the $EC and until we demonstrate that Mett and our 'kiddy corps' receivers have the ability to stretch the field we will face run stop d schemes.

I hope i'm wrong but whatever it is we will have a very good and exciting team. Let the games begin.

this....if our oline is as good as I think and Copeland can regularly get to the second level our backs should feast and make for another championship season.

very small dropoff, but the main concern will be depth..... just as talented and still have many playmakers at all levels of defense, but not as depth rotation wise... counting on some freshman to really adjust fast to the speed at which the game is played in the SEC... could be good, could be bad... we'll see during the Washington game, which will be our first real test, as far as where we stand...
