I was actually at the game.

A fact that rarely gets discussed is that some of our fans rushed their field!

The Kentucky fans that rushed the field had to climb over a wall and drop down to the field before they rushed.

The only way out was to use the ladder that the band conductor used when the band performed.

Took them a long time to clear the field!

We were sitting in that corner of the end zone so it happened right in front of us. We celebrated with the people around us but my overall sense was disappointment at the way they played. And schadenfreude at the obnoxious Kentucky fans.

We were staying at the hotel at Rupp Arena and after we got back we went to the steakhouse for dinner there, I forget the name. The hostess and manager were standing there and said "No LSU fans tonight" but they said it with smiles on their faces and welcomed us in. We had a great dinner, were served well, and left a nice tip.

Wasn't the next game the 31-0 Dennis Franchione Alabama beatdown?

Coldest I can ever remember being in Tiger Stadium.

Lorenzen really cost them the game by calling their timeout with 15 seconds left. Such a basic thing that teams do now, this is probably the case study for why.

I just came to post this! What the hell was he thinking! All they had to do was run the clock down to 3 and then call the time out and it’s they win or overtime and the bluegrass never happens! Why is that not talked about??

Lorenzen must’ve been a straight up dumb arse because he’s also the one who did the Gatorade bath too early

Was good af. I love those type of defensive players who always just end up with the ball in their hands somehow. Sadly he and TM7 were two of the best we’ve had at that.

Why did we play at Kentucky in back to back seasons?

From my friend Mr. Google:

During the 2001 and 2002 college football seasons, LSU and Kentucky played each other at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky, in back-to-back years.
Why the back-to-back road games
This seemingly unusual scheduling quirk can be explained by the SEC's scheduling format in place during those years. The SEC used a combination of permanent cross-division opponents and rotating opponents from the opposite division.
2001 Season: Kentucky and LSU had a scheduled game in Lexington as part of their SEC conference schedule.
2002 Season: Under the scheduling format, a different team from the opposite division rotated onto each team's schedule every year. Kentucky was listed as a rotating opponent from the East division for LSU in 2002, which resulted in another road trip to Lexington for the Tigers.
This meant that while LSU had a rotating opponent from the SEC East, and due to the two-year rotation, the schedule happened to put LSU at Kentucky for both the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

I was watching entire game from my apartment at the Commons. One roommate was drunk AF from night before and slept through it all. He woke up and only literally only caught the final play

Another roommate went duck hunting that morning and just heard final score on radio after it was over, so the game and ending meant nothing to him.

My dad watched from home and said he almost turned off the tv. My uncle said he actually did turn off the tv , so he ended up missing it and never found out they won until that night.

Very different game and experience for different people.

Even crazier that the decision left us with a timeout that we retained by the officials not seeing Saban calling timeout before the field goal.

Change in scheduling format. We played kentucky every year when you had 2 annual and 1 rotating east opponents. They changed that in 2002 to 1 annual and 2 rotating (probably because it did not favor Florida and Auburn) which resulted in some adjustments.

We played kentucky away and ole miss at home 01 and 02. Also, we played Bama at home I think in 91 and 92 when Arkansas and South Carolina joined. I do not think the 2012 expansion effected us but it did result in Auburn having to play Georgia and Bama either both home or both away which used to not be the case.

I noticed how dated Kentucky's uniforms looked. Meanwhile, LSU looking sharp. Crazy how long ago 2002 was.
