If we are in a situation that UK was in and that BK was in at Alabama....Does Kiffin go for 2 and risk losing the game?
I'm thinking about this in the context of the 4th and a half yard in the UK game to ice the game.
I actually was OK with the punt call considering the situation. But defense can't go prevent.

The common thought nowadays is that you should go for 2 there. In the ensuing overtime(s) you will have to begin going for 2 anyway, so you might as well use your best 2 point play now while your opponent isn't able to respond with their own.

Edit: What I wonder now is whether teams that score 1st will start trying to think ahead and begin going for 2 as well. You're kind of a sitting duck when you score 7 points as the team getting the ball 1st.

Yea Kiffin seems pretty confident in the defense and didn't believe in their kicker. He obviously believed that prolonging the game played in our favor. Now whether or not it was the right decision is a different story

That prevent is atrocious. Even mundane qbs could slant and cross their way downfield in ninety seconds.

It's one play to win the game.

He didn't take it when he had the chance in regulation so he most likely doesn't take it when it's 2 more yards and failure is guaranteed rather than possible defeat.

Going on offense first, scoring 7, and picking to go for 2 is insane. You have a MUCH better chance putting your defense on the field to stop your opponent going for 2 rather than setting yourself up to lose the game by having the other team kick an extra point. 2pt conversion rates are way lower than people give them credit for, while extra point conversions are insanely high.

BEST case is to win the toss, go on defense first, then choose to go for 2 to win the game before heading to 2OT if needed.

Just adding that if your momentum is rolling and tier defense is on their heels, do it.

That’s the way LSU Alabama went.

But the reason Lane didn’t go for two is that he was first in OT.

Prevent D: surely this doesn't happen again. We've all seen the results.
2 pt conversion: I think he would go for it if it is for the win. Especially if they refs let you continue to push for 2 more seconds after fwd progress is stopped.

I think Lane is possibly weighing the reactions of his decisions because the pressure is higher at LSU, especially after the money LSU is spending on buyout, LK, and NIL.
When at Ole Miss, he didn't have that pressure and just did what he felt and it freed him up to make risky decisions.

I’ll preface my comment here by saying that at heart, I’m a superstitious guy so take this FWIW …

Am I the only one who was thinking ‘well frick; he’s already missed two, ain’t no way he’s gonna miss 3 in a row’??

its makes sense when the underdog does it...generally the more talented team will play conservative and tie it up and lengthen the game.

It was the correct coaching call. If LSU goes for it on 4th and 1 inside their own 35 with a 3-pt lead and they get stuffed and lose, the entire football world would be crucifying the decision and rightfully so. You absolutely punt in that situation. Worst case if you punt is you probably go to OT. Worst case if you go for it is UK can beat you in regulation. It's a no brainer.

Also, in OT, Kiffin addressed this in his PC. All of the analytics say kick the PAT if you score first and go for two if you score second.

Its pretty common nowadays for everyone to go for 2 when they are in that position.

I checked and two point conversion rates are in the high 40s, so it's not a terrible call, but it's not the best decision.

I'm asking if Lane had the same decision as Will Stein had for UK and when BK went for 2 against Bama. Will Lane make that decision that UK made?
I think he will but he also had a chance to win the game with the 4th & 1/2 yard.

ETA: I am in no way asking if Lane should've gone for 2 on the 1st OT touchdown. There is no way you do that. You only do it if you are the 2nd team to score.
