1972 game-- 7-0 Tiger lead. I believe LSU ended up losing 21-35 in Birmingham

The stadium was swaying like an earthquake
Tulane selling tickets in excess of capacity and the enthusiasm of their fans (over 80% of the 86000+ in attendance) made the inevitable implosion of that venerable stadium that much easier.

Foley did play, but Looney replaced him on Tulane's final drive of the first half, which led to the Wave's first TD.

It was my first year that I can really remember with clarity, I was 7 years old, and it was the year I went to my first game. I remember a lot about it.
I know we were 9-0 going into the Bama game, both teams undefeated, bit Thanksgiving night game in Tiger Stadium, but a couple of big Bama plays early took us out of it. Then we lost to Tulane
But good memories for me - Mike Miley, Brad Davis an promising freshman by the name of Terry Robiskie - but my favorite player was All Coffee.

Sounds like Les Miles got lazy again
I always thought there were many similarities between Miles and Mac. Both followed National Championship coaches, both beat those legendary coaches the first time they played them, both really had challenges with public speaking and misappropriation of language in the proper context.
Both were accused of being to conservative on offense.
I think Les recruited better.

Steve Foley did play the entire game, but alternated with Terry Looney. It was Looney quarterbacking on both of Tulane's scoring drives, one in the second quarter and one in the fourth.

Remember if looking up LSU stats until you get to the 1960's the stats are off somewhat, math it appears to have been lacking back before the 1960's.
I have game stats sheets form the 1950's and they do not add up to the season totals. The season totals always appear to be under the real stats.
Kinda like Les Miles scrimmage stats. He'd just make them up and I think he thought he was being clever with the press.

I did some research and in typical Tulane fashion they were killed the game before 9-42 to Maryland and were blown out in the Bluebonnet bowl 7-47 by Houston but somehow those pathetic fricks beat us 14-0 in Tulane stadium. People born in the 2000’s have no idea what that game meant.

I was the football reporter for The Reveille then and the ‘73 season is etched into my mind. Visited the coaches every afternoon, rode with the team to away games, etc.
Actually a great season and fun team to be around. Lousy end, of course.
AJ Duhe was a freshman sensation and once ate an apple in three bites and then complained it had no taste.
The bus ride back to BR after the Tulane loss was like a funeral procession.
Charlie Mac was an easy man to like and players loved him. But he was a lot tougher and more no nonsense than fans knew.
Great time to be a Tiger.

How did we have so many home games?

Idiots that recall sitting in Superdome in 1973 are, well, idiots.

I need more detailed stats if you have them.
For TEAM stats I need: TOTAL PENALTIES (for and against)
TOTAL FUMBLES(Recovered and lost)
KICKOFF RET(Avg/TD's/Longs)
PUNT RET(Avg/#TD's/Longs)
PUNTS(Avg and number had blocked and number that they blocked of opponents punts)
FIELD GOALS(#ATTEMPTS vs #MADE+ distances)
PATS(#ATTEMPTS vs #MADE
For INDIVIDUAL stats I am looking for:
RUSHING= Long gains by EACH player
RECEIVING=Long gains by EACH PLAYER
PASSING=Long gains by each player
INTERCEPTION RETURNS=Total plus all yardage on individual returns
KO and PUNT RETURNS=All by individuals
Would also love to have the total # of Team SACKS the defense had but perhaps that is asking too much.
Thanks for all the help you can give!

Yeah I wasn’t born yet and only know his name due to Jefferson Parish renaming Mike Miley Playground.

O.K. Thanks! This will work!
With this data I will be able to reconstruct the 73 team and pit them against the other top college teams in the country from that season.
Best Regards,
Doug Jones

I was there. McClendon had this thing where he always alternated tailbacks each series regardless of how well a particular back was running. Brad Davis was gouging Alabama in the first half. On his coach's show later Bear Bryant show on LSU-Bama '73, Bear Bryant repeatedly called Davis a "great back" and that he'd recruited him out of Hammond. "If I'd known how great he actually was, I would have recruited him harder."
Cholly Mac alternated Steve Rogers with Davis, and Rogers was good but not as good as Davis, but then with the game scoreless and the ball on LSU's own 20, McClendon puts in the green freshman, Terry Robiskie, who was highly touted but not ready for the big stage. On the first play Miley pitched out to Robiskie, who took his eye off the ball and fumbled, giving Bama the ball on the 15. Bama QB Rutledge took it in on the next play, and Bama had momentum for the rest of the game.
Actually, LSU drove up and down the field on Bama, running 77 plays to 53 for Bama, but Bama scored on two long passing plays while LSU got down to the Bama 15 twice, but Miley threw two bad interceptions. I think Robiskie lost another fumble in the game.
Davis's 48-yard TD run was spectacular, though, and Bryant raved about it.
Regarding Tulane Stadium, I believe the last game there was the 1974 Sugar Bowl national title game when Notre Dame beat Alabama. I was there for that also.
A former LSU player who was on the sideline for the Orange Bowl vs. Penn State told me that when Cholly Mac substituted a far inferior Billy Broussard for Miley at QB in the second half, Miley threw his helmet down on the sideline and said he'd never play for LSU again. True enough, he went pro baseball the next year.

that could be completely true but iirc Miley was planning on coming back the next year because we were shaping up to have a pretty good team and I guess the Angels offered him a pretty good signing bonus, Cholly Mac immediately made a new policy, "no more baseball players playing football!"
