Some sites say its 1958 and the Advocate says 1957. I"m more inclined to believe the advocate on this.

The picture on top is Jimmy Taylor 1957. Tigers were already wearing the more modern style by then.
Note the bottom picture was 1956 in the old style purples, AT HOME. 1956 was the last year, before the 1980s, that LSU wore purple at home, and it was one of their worst seasons. It seems like the purple jinx took root back then.
