Tigger, are you saying that there was probably about 400 copies of this book, maybe given out with the Gumbos?
Would I find more info on this book at LSU or the state archives?

FYI - The Hill Memorial Library is NOT the current journalism building. It is still standing West of the Middleton Library and has been greatly expanded since that 1902 photo.

Is the first picture the Journalism building?
Yes. The journalism building was moved from the original Baton Rouge campus to its present site.

That's not the Hill Memorial Library. What is now the Mass Communications building was the Alumni Hall on the old campus and was dismantled in 1934 to reconstruct Alumni Hall on the new campus. The "modern-day" Hill Memorial Library was built when the new campus was constructed in the 1920's.

Just the student body is around 410 in 1902.
Number of books produced, a quess is around 50. I can call around and get a better number.
If it is 1905 the student body is close to the 450 range.
This appears to be a special event book, so if it is a book form 1905, that is the 40th year anniversary of the reopening of LSU after the Civil War.
If form 1902, it is likely because LSU gets title to the Pentagon Barracks and campus for educational use only.
1886 was the year the Campus was moved to where the state capital grounds are today, so that date would not mean anything when looking into the book.

Thanks for sharing, what a wonderful document of LSU history.
I'm curious, how did you come across this. Please don't say a garage sale!

It was easier than a garage sale, I found it on eBay

I took the book to LSU's Hill Memorial Library today. They do have copy of it, but their's is about to fall apart. They do not know how old it is, they think it is 1905. I showed them my theory of why I think it is 1902.
That book is not signed like mine is and we could not find any info who F.H. Burnette maybe (the signature in my book).
That library is pretty protective. I could not bring my book in there (had to leave it in a locker in the lobby), and needed a photo ID just to see a book. I know they have some very rare books and some collectors would go crazy in there if they could.
So, to sum it up, I did not learn anymore on the book than I already knew.
