They wouldn't have him walking off on crutches if he had a broken fibula. He would be carted to the locker room in an air cast

Broken fibula does not mean you can’t bear weight. And there is a lot of diversity to broken fibula. Weber A, B, C ankle fractures each come with different odds of needing surgery. Virtually all Weber A (fibula broken below the plafond) are treated non operatively with weight bearing as tolerated in a boot. Weber B (fibula broken at the level of the plafond) is about 50/50 non operatively vs surgery. If unstable on stress imaging then it gets surgery. If stable then again…weight bearing as tolerated in a boot. And for Weber C (above the plafond) they most often have associated syndesmotic disruption and require surgery. And even in that case (Weber C grossly unstable ankle that requires surgery) I saw a high school kid walking on it and trying to play a week later because he is uniquely tough. Had to force him to get the X-ray to learn he had the fibula fracture because his ankle was so swollen a week later.
