With big $$$ being given out like candy, what happens to players that are complete busts?

Are NIL guaranteed deals because it would seem like a school can only take so many busts, before the donors quit writing checks? With the players in total control, it would seem like the attorney drawing up the paperwork is going to make sure the players are protected financially, regardless if they become a star or a bust.

All NIL deals are different, but they can't be predicated on performance (i.e., not being a bust). Just like in the pros, sometimes people pay too much for underperforming players, and sometimes players outperform their compensation.
What makes you think it's the players' attorneys drawing up the paperwork? It's a negotiated process, just like any 5-8-figure business deal. The collectives (and the actual businesses doing real NIL endorsement deals) typically have far more expensive, experienced attorneys than the players do.

It’s not a new concept; they get their money to either squander on family/“friends” or they have a nice nest egg to start their life.
Schmucks and grown men on message boards will want to string them up and burn them, but truth is they won’t be a total bust until year or two down road and at the point, everyone will be smoking some other 18 5* cack.
What happens to coaches that get bought out for $17M and $75M? They live like fricking kings and no one ever talks about them 6 months after

Right because coaches go recruit bust players on purpose

NIL still being fairly new, big time donors haven't been burned much yet. The more they are, the more cautious they will be I would imagine.

I was assuming that because the players have all the power and the players are also just teenagers, so I would assume they would have legal representation to ensure they are taken care of. It is my understanding that some attorneys are now focusing strictly on NIL deals.

It's real early, but i can guarantee that once some of these insanely overpriced kids bust, there will be some drawdowns in the market. It has already gotten overinflated in only 4 years. We went from seeing it crazy that Ewers got signed to a million dollar deal to 3 mill and a luxury house Caleb Williams got, to 8 mill Nico got, to now 12 mill that Underwood got. SEC teams promising 5 mill in a single year to Drake Maye. A rumored Michigan player (many expected All American Will Johnson the CB) being offered a million. Average defensive tackles coming out the 2nd portal window asking for a million dollars. It's getting crazy, way too fast.
The top 2-3 guys at LSU last year were making 500-600k and neither were Jayden Daniels. You can bet your arse that no less than 10 guys will be making no less than half a million a year for LSU starting next year.

Nothing like dissension in the locker room when the starter gets 1/10 of the amount of the back up that was overrated to begin with ...

Just like a 1st round pick in the NFL that’s a bust. They make a decent amount of money and never live up to expectations.

I also wonder if this will stop all of the opt-out mid season .

BK mentioned players above the cut so obviously there's players below the cut. They'll be gone.

The only thing you can do is caveat the emptor.

They get the money theirs contract calls for. Dollars and duration. If the school is concerned about their being busts, they don’t have to guarantee the money for multiple years.

Again, the contracts are all negotiated, but I guarantee you they are drafted primarily by the attorneys for the collectives. The party making the offer almost always drafts the deal. They do dozens of them, while an individual player's rep doesn't have a standard form. The collective sends over a draft to the player's representative, who redlines it and sends it back. After several iterations of this, the agreement is finalized.

Arch Manning last year had the biggest NIL. O tract in the country and didn’t take a snap or maybe just a few!
