Clemson's last 4 recruiting classes finished something like, 12, 8, 14, 8 depending on which service you check out. They couldn't compete with bama for recruits. So how did Clemson do it? We all say LSU has to beat bama in the spring (recruiting) so they can beat them in the fall. But that's not what Clemson did. So, I ask you, how did they do it? Until this recruiting season Clemson hasn't been close to the number 1 recruiting class in the country. Now that they beat bama twice in the CFP and won 2 NC's, they are competing with bama for recruits in the spring. Regardless how high LSU's recruiting classes are ranked, they still must beat bama on the field or at least make the CFP before they will compete with these teams in the spring on a year to year basis.
So how did Clemson do this? How did they beat bama twice in the CFP with such low ranked recruiting classes?

Because Dabo is the best coach in the country. They also had an amazing D line the past 3-4 years, and some amazing QBs.
Stuff we have been lacking.

Development of players. The lowly ranked 3 stars were developed and coached up to play in Vendables scheme. They have recruited well In the trenches in the past 4 or 5 years also

We should have both in 2019. Best QB we've had in a few years and an experienced and good dline.

1. Elite recruiting at key positions
QB, LT and the DL were full of very high end players.
2. Their top players from their class 4 years ago stayed a 4th year. You don’t see a lot of 5th year 5 stars and Clemson had a couple on the DL
3. Great coaching

1) They recruited top in the country in the important positions (DL and QB)
2) They play in the easy ACC where their toughest competition has been Syracuse. Even then, they still needed some luck and some individual extraordinary games to make it out unscathed.
3) Their AD stayed with a coach even though he hadn't won any meaningful games in the first 10 years and had actually choked a couple times.
4) Their fan base lives and dies Clemson. Even on their down years, they are relatively positive about their program.

Stayed 4 or 5 years, 5 stars, Dabo graduated from Bama....anything sound familiar to his Militant Midget demi-god....

Since 2012, they've had 1 major assistant change. Chad Morris left after 2014. They've had the same guys since 2015.
They're coaching staff is one of the best in the country.

Limit Jr. attrition.
Don't play an SEC schedule.
Dabo is an excellent coach.

you kind of answered your own question.
It was a serious conundrum for the recruiting services that fans give millions of dollars to each year.
How can a team that averages closer to a #12 recruiting ranking every year make a team that IS #1 every year look like a high school team.
NOW and ONLY NOW Clemson has a good recruiting class?? Ha Ha Ha!!!
Has anything really changed besides them consistently beating the All-PRO team? Or does Clemson now deserve the Bama or Clempson bump?
Recruiting services are cool and everything but not the be all and end all of perfection. It wasn't that long ago that a player who doesn't even exist was rated as a 3-star by one of the recruiting services just because the imaginary player supposedly received an offer from Bama.

A good offensive and defensive line with an NFL caliber QB will win you championships. Every other position just needs to be serviceable.
You don’t need “the highest rated receivers” or “the highest rated defensive backs or linebackers” or even a “superstar running back”. You give a good NFL caliber QB enough time, he will find an opening from an average receiver. You have a good enough offensive line, they will make an average running back look good.
On the defensive side, if your line gets a lot of push, it disrupts the QB or RB tremendously and either a lineman or a linebacker can easily get in and make the sack/tackle.
